As you might expect, they're currently translating these transcripts into Japanese. Now, technically ZUN was speaking in Japanese in response to a translated question, so what he says should be slightly more accurate, but it seems this is just a translation of the summary, so eh.

Wouldn't be too surprising if that was their Exact Words, and ZUN dodged the question by not specifying what counts as "old" in his eyes.

ZUN himself may not do it, but the floodgates are likely open for fans to release Touhou fangames on Steam. If he's on record as saying he likes Steam, there's little reason for him to not allow this, and this alone is a huge boon for the future.

That song shows some great potential that Pristine Beat holds, but isn't quite well-made enough by itself to really make much of it. I am really looking forward to some progressive rock or somesuch, though. Perhaps a jazz/hard rock mix!

Nothing wrong with them being canon. It wasn't like they didn't exist, Zun never said that. I'm pretty sure that email from back then specifically mentioned that Yuki and Mai exist, unless otherwise stated.
Does Yuuka, Alice, Reimu and Marisa being the same character even matter? The Windows version of them is what you should be looking at. If they contradict the PC-98 versions, well, it means the PC-98 versions are non-canon.
Either that, or they exhibit character growth and their personalities differ from back then.
It isn't like you are trying to combine the 2 generations. If there is a difference, it means the previous generation is retconned.

Those last two statements kind of contradict each other.
Hmm, why so? If there is something in Windows that contradicts PC-98, then retcon, unless you can think of an excuse. For example, PC-98 Alice looks nothing like Windows Alice. You can do one of two things. Say that it is retconned, or make an excuse saying that Alice somehow change her style and got bigger.
However, if there is no contradictions, like stating that Shinki and Yumeko exists in Makai, then they are there. What they are doing, who knows? But they exist.
