Rather than smart, I'd prefer to be wise. It would let me be silly more often.I was digging through my computer and found some old snippets from a For Want Of A Nail idea I had. Warning: Character Death.
“Asuna!”
Who was calling her name?
“Asuna!”
Oh it was Setsuna what did she need? What had they’d been doing anyways?
“Please stay with me!”
Oh that’s right… they’d been fighting that dragon and-then what?
“Help is on its way just hold on!”
Help? Why did she need help? She was just-oh now she remembered. The dragon has taken a bite at her…
“Asuna! Please! If you die Negi-sensei will…”
Die? She wasn’t dying was she? She tried to move, but found she couldn’t, she couldn’t feel anything actually. She just felt cold, very, very cold.
I’m sorry Negi I guess I won’t be able to protect you any longer.
“Set-su-na,” she rasped using whatever remaining strength she had to speak. Setsuna looked at her aghast. “Asuna please don’t speak you-“
“Be sure you and the others take care of Negi okay?” Asuna gave her teary-eyed friend one last smile. “He always… pushes… himself…”
The knight’s body fell still before she could finish. Setsuna grabbed her friend’s body as if to shake her back to life, “No not like this Asuna you can’t die like this please,” she begged. “You are my friend I-I can’t loose you. Negi-sensei and Oujousama can’t loose you either. Asuna please open your eyes!”
It was no used though. Eventually Setsuna broke down crumpling up against Asuna’s body as the realization of the situation finally sunk in.
Kagurazaka Asuna, Student of Mahora Academy’s Class 3-A, Leader of Ala Alba, and a very good friend was dead.
“Negi-sensei? What’s wrong? Why are you crying?” Chisame was at Negi’s side in an instant. It was early morning and they were just getting up. She didn’t see when Negi started crying, but she certainty heard it. She could see he was holding one of his Pactio cards, Asuna’s from the look of it. It wasn’t her thing, but she did her best to comfort him rubbing his back with hope he’ll calm down. After several minutes it seem to work and she pulled away to look at him. His face was red and puffy with tears still dripping down his face.
“Sensei?”
“It’s Asuna-san,” Negi’s voice broke through his sobs.
“Asuna-san, she’s-” another sob interrupted him.
“What about Kagurazaka?”
“She’s dead.”
“H-how do you,” Chisame started to ask, but Negi had already broken down again and Chisame struggled to do her best to comfort him. Off to the side Rakan had watched the scene play out with an unreadable expression on his face. Quietly the large man turned and left the two alone to grieve for now. They’d resume training later.
“Yes Fate-san, the princess had a chunk of her side taken out by a dragon, she died from blood loss not long after,” reported Tsukiyomi. Fate was far to composed to show how he felt about this.
Dynamis on the other hand was far more verbal about how he felt.
“This ruins EVERYTHING!” he shouted, “without the princess we cannot complete our mission! Everything is lost now!”
“What do you propose we do now then Dynamis?” Fate asked him.
Dynamis was silent for several moments thought still simmering in rage and the indignity of it all. Why? Why was their goal always ripped away from them just when it seem success was within their grasp? Damn Ala Rubra! Damn them to hell!
Unable to complete their mission what else did they exist for? They might as well shut themselves down and be done with it, but perhaps there was one thing they had left. Due to being artificial being created by the Mage of Beginnings to serve him Dynamis’s range of emotional expression was limited, but ‘hatred’ was certainty something he felt and could readily get behind.
“Revenge,” he finally said, “we have revenge.”
Fate turned away from him neither showing sign he agreed or disagreed with that.
The Grave Master who had been silent through most of the conversation let out a soft chuckle.
“Truly if your master could see you now, he would mourn what a disappointment you’ve become Dynamis, though it isn’t much of a surprise” she then gave him and Fate a flat look, “None of you dolls ever were capable of understanding what it meant to live.”
Before either could say anything she teleported away.

No plots to resurrect or clone her? Cosmo Entelechea, I am disappoint.
That would go against the Nail I wanted to explore. I wrote this right after my old dog died. She was old and it just happened literally in my backyard. Sometimes that happens, loved ones can just be gone in a blink, life is cruel like that.
Also it was never quite explained what Asuna is so I'd questioned anyone other the LM himself being able to "recreate" her. Without Asuna they can't use their Master Keys IIRC anyways.
Another option was to have Asuna be hit by a car while on her paper route and die from that. Just to reinforce how unpredictably cruel life can be. That and I wanted to explore what happens when the key to the villain's plan is removed from the equation and while this does mean MM is likely screwed, for our Mahora Characters life will go on for them. I wanted to write something about dealing with loss. I thought it would help me with my own.

Yeah, but a magical clone story gives the heroes the chance to rescue the clone, only to have it shoved in their faces that the clone is not Asuna.
Ouch, my widdle heart.
Though one wonders even near the beginning of the series that would be enough to kill her, all things considering.
Well, Rakan says (Whether or not wherever he got that story from is true) that Asuna was born into the family, so the Lifemaker straight out creating her is sort of iffy. There's also the issue that even given her lineage, her powers make her a freak even to those folks, to the point that putting her up in a tower for at least a century. You normally don't do that unless there was already a reason to demonize sever her from the family proper.

I have timeframe issues with that considering the cloning process would probably delay C.E.'s plan. They wouldn't attack the ball, they'd have no reason too since they'd have gone back into hiding to create Asuna 2.0.
AA is still scattered at this point and all their efforts would be focused on returning home (and proving their innocence). They'd have no reason to look for C.E. right then and C.E. wouldn't give them one. Short of stealing Asuna's corpse for her DNA. Unless of course Setsuna had her cremated before C.E. could steal it.

You know, it would probably be easier to force Asuna's remains into a "living" state to get her magic cancel working again without actually having to worry about getting her brain functioning again than it would be to create another Asuna.
Edit: *Cue Asuna suddenly reviving completely.*
Dynamis: "That's impossible! There's no brain activity!"
*Asuna strikes a pose.*
Asuna: "Baka Red!"
Ayaka: "I knew it."

Given that forcibly using her powers causes Asuna pain (The tower, Graff's amulet), I think a prerequisite is for her to actually be alive then trying to use her remains for...whatever. I don't think the Lifemaker would be too pleased with the idea, but you can pretty chuck any character traits into him and it'd probably work.
Isn't the Lifemaker sealed, though?
After Fate ports the world over, he claims that his next task is reviving him. If Plan A doesn't pan out, CE would probably make getting him out of his crystalline prison their top priority.
If Asuna's not available, then it's a race to get to the Lifemaker so it can press the Off button.
himitsu keisatsu seifu chokuzoku kokka hoanbu na no da himitsu keisatsu yami ni magireru supai katsudou torishimariI'm rather glad you used a dragon and not a car, cause my brother got hit by one a while back. It was rather unpleasant when we got the call.
I'm sorry to hear that. My condolences.
So I stopped reading UQ Holder for a bit due to the place I was reading it at suddenly going down and then never coming back. Anyways, I recently got tired of waiting and found another site to read it on. I am now up to date. And I have to say, I enjoyed what was probably an inappropriate amount of laughter over the scene where Touta tells Kuromaru he just realized he loves Yukihime. Especially since Touta (unintentionally) sets it up so it looks like he's about to confess, first. Kuromaru's reaction just set me off.
