In order to check out how obscure a band is, just look at how often it has been listened on Last.fm

I'd mention God Is an Astronaut, but hey have been listened to 11.7 million times... Which is more than Buckethead.

So, would Pedobear be counted as obscure? He's got less than 1000 plays. Unfortunate, because he's one of the greatest musicians I've ever heard.

:D

I bought the debut of Destrophy. It was a good listen, too. Like Five Finger Death Punch with symphonic glam. The Story Of Your Life was good.

I'm not sure if they're considered obscure anymore (their biggest hit was used as the theme song for a Canadian reality show and the WWE survivor series), but I loved the debut by Art of Dying. Completely and Inside Its Raining are excellent.

Both bands are signed, so they're definitely not "Indie".

Live Human, at the bizzarre intersection of Jazz, Instrumental Hip-Hop, and Electronica. Weird but awesome, as far as i know, their only album is Elefish Jellyphant.

Anamanaguchi, a band that combines guitars and drums with the classic chiptune sounds of a hacked Super Nintendo Entertainment System. Ridiculously catchy stuff.

^Oh my gosh, I totally know what band you're talking about. They're awesome. Their debut album is available on the Internet for free; here is the link.

Do The National count as obscure? They're critics' favorites, but I've never met anyone who listened to them. and they rule. I don't know if Godspeed You! Black Emperor counts either, but I've been to a lot of record stores that don't have any of their music. Which is sad, because they own.

How obscure is This Town Needs Guns? I've only heard of them from Saeglopur before.

Also, they seem to be pretty awesome.

Shoujo Lolita 23Q is obscure. Even in Japan, if its lack of Wikipedia page is anything to go by.

^^ They're almost totally unheard of outside of the 'Oxford scene', let alone the UK. They're not mentioned once on Pitchfork. I'd say they're pretty obscure.

My mom likes the Doves. I can take 'em or leave 'em personally, but her taste in music is generally excellent.

Do Big Sugar count as obscure? Anyway, sometimes you just want some Alberta hick-blues-rock, and when you want that, you put on this.

... sublime wouldn't be obscure, would they? I don't know too much about what other people know about; I just listen to whatever I happen to find and like.

The Evpatoria Report. A post-rock band from Switzerland. They're sort of like a more melodic Godspeed You! Black Emperor. Any band that can be compared to GY!BE qualifies as awesome, and they're quite obscure as well.

China's first Visual Kei band, Silver Ash, who I am listening to right now.smile

Lunar Eclipse Gorgeous Devil Liar

This is one band I'm proud to call myself a fan of. They've kept going for ages despite the fact that the Chinese government took a dislike to them, which resluted in them getting booted off their label, resulting in them relying on donations... and then in 2007 government legislation meant they had to change completely, but they released just one sort of indie-pop song before going quiet. They're still standing their ground, although I don't know how active they are, and how much of the visual aspect they've had to drop.

Serenity, (not the damn movie!) a totally awesome prog metal band. The Protomen, a cool band that turns Megaman into an Orwellian concept album (two, actually.) Not sure how obscure he is, but Brad Sucks is a cool alt... alt band. And I wouldn't really say Anamanaguchi is obscure since Penny Arcade mentioned them and used a song in PATV, but meh.

Oh, god yes The Protomen. Funny enough, I'm listening to them at this moment.

I don't know quite how obscure they are, but I think that From Monument to Masses are fucking rad.

Locust Toybox. Electronic music from David Firth, the guy responsible for Salad Fingers. Surprisingly upbeat, catchy, and cheerful for being composed by the guy responsible for said Nightmare Fuel-laden animation.
