One of them is involuntary and the person experiencing it often thinks it's real. The other is usually voluntary, and the person almost always knows it's a simulation. Not understanding the difference between those two is a problem I can't help you with.

What about a cold open that involves 2 characters fighting each-other, but then it's revealed that they were really just sparring for practice (no simulation involved). Should that count?

How about we make the definition "Seems like a Batman Cold Open, but it's revealed that the characters were never really in any danger, or that any danger was only for the sake of practice."

So that would include the whole range: training simulations, training in general, and dreams.

So basically the trope would be Fakeout Batman Cold Open.

You do realize that if the 2 are not the same, there is some misuse on all just a dream?

Plenty of times you know you're dreaming, and people develop controlled dreaming as a skill.

All Just a Dream is any time the apparent situation is not reality. That currently covers training role play games, holographic simulations, and dreaming.

A new thread for The Teaser needs to be launched, proposing a rename to Cold Open because the term "teaser" is a lot broader than "first part of a work". This one should be linked; renaming all cold open tropes was proposed. Then this thread can be locked.

Okay, so no rename, I'm good with that.

But aren't we redefining this?

Is anyone okay with the definition I gave earlier? "Seems like a Batman Cold Open, until it's revealed that the character or characters involved were never really in any danger, or that any danger was only for the sake of practice."

abk 0100,
That redefinition suggestion seems alright to me. If no one has any objections to it, I would glad to swap it in *.

As for renaming The Teaser to Cold Open, I think that probably deserves its own thread.

Clocking this thread. Is there anything left to do here?

Waiting on a TRS slot? Finishing off one of these cleaning efforts will usually open one up.

Crown Description:

The objection to Danger Room is that it implies the trope only alludes to a holodeck-style simulation. This is a Crowner regarding whether this trope needs a rename for this specific reason.
