Gamepark mishandled the GP32 badly and never actually released the XGP. To the best of my knowledge, Microsoft has yet to actually attempt to create a portable game system (Project Origami turned out to be a tablet PC).

This. I really can't imagine Nintendo losing in the portable market. The real question is whether this things will be another PSP and enjoy moderate success as a second-best thing or another... I dunno, one of those other half a dozen portable consoles that never went anywhere.
It doesn't seem like "moderate success" for this thing is anywhere near the level of the PSP. I'm going to have to wait for more details before really gauging what this is really about, but so far it seems like it's supposed to be more like just another phone(except not a phone) than something that's really trying to compete against Nintendo and Sony.
Helpful Scripts and Stylesheets here. While I can't claim to know much about Battlestar Galactica, I will say that I find the idea of having a sci-fi series MMO as your killer app to be sort of...flawed. Just seems to lack the appeal it would take to really move systems.
But who knows. Too early to really say. But trying to compete with Nintendo and Sony in the portable market doesn't fill one with optimism.
"People are calling me stupid on the internet."Windows 7 Phone has Live and XBLA-type games on it, but Microsoft isn't interested in entering that space til the third iteration of the Xbox.
If they announce the Jungle will be $99... that could launch the system nicely.

Jonah FalconIt's going to be swept under the Nintendo juggernaut for sure.
It can only be called fate. That here. I would again gather the three with the crests. That I should lay my hand on that which grants the wishes of the beholder. That when power, wisdom, and courage come together, the gods would have no choice but to come down. Not always. You can't predict a system's success or failure based on one variable like price. The initial predictions for the Wii did not take into account the influx of casual gamers into the market. It also came from an established name. For many people "Nintendo" is still synonymous with "video game." Panasonic's only foray into video games was the 3DO in the 90's. And as several people have stated before, the 3DS is already making waves. The Jungle doesn't seem to offer anything that the DS and the PSP don't already offer, and it offers even less now that the 3DS is coming out.

That when power, wisdom, and courage come together, the gods would have no choice but to come down.Again, it's the games. Having your Killer App be an MMO based off a Science Fiction series is probably not the best way to start unless it's hyped to hell and has a lot of promise.
"Hipsters: the most dangerous gang in the US." - Pacific MackerelA hitherto-unmentioned factoid about this little device: it will run Linux.
Now, it's possible to get certain MMOGs running on Linux, but annoying - my friend who tried to get City Of Heroes running through WINE can attest to that. It's not something a casual consumer is likely to put much effort into, especially not if it takes more than half an hour or so. That will make it a hard sell as a portable that only plays one genre of games.
You could preload World Of Warcraft or something onto it, I suppose, but there's always going to be the customer who has trouble getting their preferred MMO *coughCityofHeroescough* running.
And then there's fees. Even if the unit sells for a I-personally-find-it-unfeasible $99, how is it going to connect? If it's over 3G you're gonna have to pay some kind of fee, and that's on top of the $15 you're already paying for your MMO? If it's just over Wifi, then doesn't that severely restrict its usability as a portable?
I don't know. I just don't see the market for a device like this. Nifty idea, but there are too many ifs.
The blind man walking off the cliff is not making a leap of faith.God, if somebody made a handheld that could play WoW well over cellphone/Bluetooth they'd be completely unstoppable.
So, has anything even happened with this thing yet?

Whatever happened to Gamepark and Microsoft's handheld ventures?
