What's wrong with Dan Slott's Spidey? And Zeb Wells was pretty good on what I read of Avenging Spider-Man.

okay ignoring the whole Barbara gets paralyzed thing for this hypothetical.

All the Batgirls*

could use different personas if they wanted to fight crime together and keep from getting confused.

  • Barbara Gordon = Batgirl
  • Stephanie Brown = Spoiler
  • Cassandra = Black
  • Kathy Kane? = Batwoman

Could the Robin's do the same thing?

So, there's an... interesting rumor that's been going around about the comics industry. Rich Johnston, the webmaster of Bleedingcool, claims to know a dark secret about the past of of a noted comic executive that, if it were released, would completely destroy the industry. He described this person as "worse than Jimmy Sevile;" Sevile was a beloved British TV host who was discovered, after his death, to have raped 450 children. So yeah, very bad person if it's true. He says he's not going to release the information until after the person dies, because (so he says) the resulting scandal would result in at least one of the big two having to immediately shut down, putting hundreds of innocent people out of work. Most people seem to think it's BS, or at least that he's overinflating something comparatively minor to stroke his own ego. All he'll say about the alleged crime is that it's not rape and it's not something still going on today. The best guess anyone has seems to be "war criminal."

Any thoughts?

More seriously, my bet is that it's going to be some sort of unsubstantiated bullshit, and that if he released it now, the person would immediately respond with, "Uh, no? Fuck you, here's a libel suit, you lying sack of shit, suck my hairy balls."

He's going to wait for the person to die because dead men can't sue, and it'd be easier to dismiss the objections of the person's family.

[up] It really does sound like an ego-trip more than anything else. What he's basically saying is "I could destroy the industry if I wanted, but because I'm so nice, I won't."

C0mraid from Here and there Since: Aug, 2010
#465: Mar 19th 2013 at 7:12:05 PM

[up]Except of course if it were totally true he'd be complete and utter cunt. Even if it's not he's still playing a game that shouldn't be played.

One minor point though. A lot of people would view a murder as worse than a lifetime of abusing children and others. So this alleged crime doesn't actually have to be exceptionally awful.

If he knows a crime has been committed, doesn't failing to come forth with whatever evidence he imagines he has make him complicit?

[up] It at least makes him a quite despicable person himself. Either he's spreading rumors about an innocent person out of ego, or he's allowing a criminal to get away with it out of ego. tongue

first of all I love superheroes but don't really know much about comics so hold off on the torches and pitchforks for this. The fantastic four are awesome and it's been one of my pet projects to assemble an all-female version of them, just because. previously I was using Firestar for Human Torch but I just found out about Nova Frankie Raye? should I use her instead? She has a stronger connection to the original team in her powers are similar though I'm not really sure what they are exactly*

[up] I just now read the issue where she discovers her powers. Reed tells her, at the time, that Johnny's flame burns hotter, and he's capable of greater speeds, but Frankie's flame has a more precise temperature range, and will burn longer. That was prior to her becoming a herald of Galactus, of course. So, yeah, she can do whatever the Human Torch can, just a little differently.

The big obstacle to using her in your story is she's dead. But if you're willing to work around that, she's a good choice. She does have a real connection to the team, which Firestar doesn't.

Umm shes a comic book character she dos not stay dead

not sure but I think I sense an overall trend of trading raw power for skill on my team, you know except for invisible woman who's not replaced.

Actually, she's done a remarkably good job of staying dead. The 2010 Heralds mini had a piece of her spirit inhabit a new body, but Frankie's still dead. Frances Hyatt may or may not be Frankie Raye, but she is Nova. She just hasn't been seen since that mini ended. Seems like people have decided they'd just as soon forget that mini. I didn't think it was bad, though I didn't care for the art. I will say Kathryn Immonen's writing has gotten better since then. Her Ji M is great.

If I might be so bold: You're probably thinking, "Why, I should find someone who can stretch." I think you should instead think, "I should find someone who's a genius." Might I recommend Valeria Richards? The adult version? Alternatively, Suzi Endo, sometimes known as Cybermancer. Option 3: Sage, of the X-Men.

Sue and She-Hulk aren't geniuses. She-Hulk's a talented lawyer, that doesn't exactly translate to figuring out alien technology. Sue's picked up a lot being married to Reed, but she's still not a genius. If you want an alternative version of the Fantastic Four, you need a legitimate genius. Because that's Reed's role on the team.

So I still say Adult Valeria. Suzi and Sage are both good, too, but Val is the best choice. She's actually smarter than her father. With her genius, you could justify giving her any power you felt like. But more importantly, she fills the role of a brilliant but occasionally distant and even manipulative member. In your team, as it stands, Sue would be the soul of the team, Jen the humour, Frankie the heart, and that leaves Val as the brain.
