Preview for "The Wild Hunt".

So that hand is apparently unrelated to the Jake Lich, just sort of similar looking.

I'll be honest and admit that it was the first thing that caught my attention. Marcy's always had the more creative fashion sense but... those are some surprisingly modest swimsuits for a sentient, aromantic piece of bubble gum and a vampire long out of f'cks to give.

Actually, considering the last part of that sentence, I guess it's not that surprising.

This is still a kid show...

If they aren't actual technical adults, they can't show nuts about that skin...

So I'm not sure about this new arc with Gumbald as the villain. On one hand, I kind of don't see how it could last the rest of the season, or think it would be a good thing to end the show with. On the other, I'm gonna be pissed if there's another huge break, then there's only one or two more episodes about it.

Thoughts on the episode:

  • When Huntress Wizard was knocked over, I thought Finn was gonna attack the monster to save her. Then she got up and deliberately forced Finn to fight, which I like a lot more. It was like she made an argument about why he needed to attack, but with actions instead of words.
  • "Son of Rap Bear" was nice. It's interesting that, even though Fire King pulled a Heel–Face Turn, he's probably never even going to try to make up with his daughter, and she's apparently accepting that.
  • The show finally reconciles "Bonnie and Neddy" with PB's family photo album from "Susan Strong". I'd call it unnecessary, but at least they're doing stuff with it.
  • Gumbald had some valid, if extremely hypocritical, complaints. PB said she needed equals, but as soon as her family got in the way of her plans, she was happy to leave them as obedient idiots, and design future candy people to be that way. That's not quite as horrific as what Gumbald tried—deliberately turning someone stupid so they'll be your servant—but it's still pretty freaking unethical.
  • It's been pointed out to me the likely reason Gumbald came back: Just as the World-Healing Wave from the end of Elements reverted Jake to his "true/original" form, it turned Punchy back into Gumbald—and presumably turned Manfried and Crunchy back into Molly and Chicle.

I've realized it's been a whole season since Dr. Gross' ship exploded, and I remember no sign of her. You think she's really dead? That'd be pretty disappointing.

[up][up]Some of the water nymphs always wore bikinis, so Marceline wearing one wouldn't have been too out of the ordinary.

The animation in "The Wild Hunt" was really top good for some reason...I liked it, really made it stand out.

[up][up]Well it explains why Candy People are pretty doomb, but it also explains one other thing...

The moment Prubbs tried making another candy creature similar to her: Goliad, she pretty much did exactly what Gumbald was trying to do except with psychic mind control instead of poison.

[up]I'll give her the benefit of the doubt; all three of her attempts at intelligent candy creations were amoral and/or insane. The fact that PB tried multiple times suggests she does want an equal at least somewhat.

Also, the episode's ending shows she at least thinks she made them stupid so they'll be happy, not obedient. Even that's pretty morally shaky—as much as the motive even matters. And just leaving those three as idiots (I'm not assuming she could change them back, but she explicitly didn't want to) is awful, even if that's what they tried to do to her.

You know, it's kind of weird that Mother Gum was this huge thing with all those parts, but PB and Neddy were apparently the only pieces that ever broke off.

The family, Lemongrab, and Goliad. (I'm assuming Peppermint Butler is. "regular" candy person in this regard.) Lemongrab failed at even being intelligent, but he was made in an attempt at a successor.

But the way he was made doesn't really connect to her in anyway other than just being a successor...

The Family and Goliad are the way they are because of her being apart of them in ways...

The Technic Pack beginnings of Bonnibel's 800-years-ago candy kingdom = extremely mondo way-too-fucking cool. (Can't find a picture.)

The show now has 13 episodes left.

Back to the "How do they end this?" question, the point the show ends on is inevitably going to feel arbitrary. The show's never had a Myth Arc, just a series of plotlines continuously flowing from one to the other, and I'm not sure how much notice the writers had for ending it.

Long term intrigue was more about fleshing out backstory for the setting and characters. Now that we've seen the Candy Kingdom's formation, the principal cast's backgrounds are getting close to exhausted. The only other things I can think of is whatever happened to Joshua and Margaret (because they were part of Finn and Jake's lives), and what was Marceline's home life with her dad after Simon managed to unite the two (which is hopefully going to be covered in a future episode about the two).

What we can reasonably hope for is to resolve the existing plotlines and for whatever's the last Story Arc to have its own satisfactory conclusion, even if it's not based a plotline started a long time ago.

But this goes back into my concern with introducing Gumbald. The show already had a bunch of plotlines still open or open-ended (feel free to add any I've forgotten):

  • What's up with Magic Betty and Magic Man/Prismo/Cosmic Owl?
  • What does two of the jewels in Ice King's crown falling out mean? Is there going to be any hope that Betty managed to do something besides screwing Simon out of a chance to die like he wanted? (Did anyone get a good look at the crown in "Always BMO Closing"?)
  • Is this multiverse concept involving the Lich going any further? Is Golb going to have some active role in this, or just remain a background figure? Given the Eternal Recurrence of the setting, it's seems the Lich's inevitably coming back, even if Sweet P is fine, but I'd like a reason to think it'll take the usual eons for him to reincarnate, not like another month.
  • If Dr. Gross is alive, one assumes we'll see the her plan to invade the Islands. If not, we'll probably not see the Islands or anyone from it again. Which I guess is fine, but is a bit irritating given her last known fate was so non-committal and then saw more of her in Islands (and how much of a piece of crap she is/was).
  • What the hell was the Shapeshifter up to when it conceived Jake? If it just wanted to reproduce, that's fine if its descendants just have weird powers/appearances. But I'd like some assurance that Jake and his descendants are 'not Unwitting Pawns to an Eldritch Abomination's plot to corrupt Ooo's gene pool for who knows why.

...And what the heck did the mushroom war look like? It's always just "oh yeah, that happened once. There was a nuclear war. With mushroomy things." I wanna see just one minute of uncut footage of the world getting fuckin' destroyed, and the giant hole in the side of the Earth appearing, not footage of the world already having been destroyed prior like we always get. Patience had an intriguing flashback to what looked like the world one week before then, and I'm stuck on getting some details on how that week went and how weird the world was pre-mushwar, why it got messed up, and what The Lich had to do with it exactly. Not seeing that unfold is kind of like waiting years to watch History of Trunks just to not see all of Trunks' friends actually fight the Androids. They just kinda skipped the best mentioned battle.

In the "Wild Hunt" preview, it looks like Jake changed colors. Is that just something he can do now, after fixing it post-transformation?
