What interesting things have you only recently learned about?

To be clear, this is about things which have been true for some time and you only recently learned about, not things that only happened recently. In particular, recent deaths of celebrities and other high-profile individuals should go in the General RIP Thread.

You can be overqualified for a job, and not get it because of that. Which is bullshit—if I'm hiring, I want the most overqualified people I can find.

[up]Nope. Nope. NOOOOOOOOOOOPE.

The big problem with hiring overqualified people is that many will get bored easily, and then leave.

While some jobs are hard to be overqualified for, some jobs in retail for example shouldn't be given to anybody with a degree.

And if you hire too many overqualified people, you end up with a 'revolving door' situation, where one person comes in and another person comes out, and you end up spending your time retraining those who come in.

That is HUGELY expensive and doesn't keep a team melded, and ends up as a house of sand because it's not built on a solid foundation.

Through a span of around 7 years, most of the cells in your body die and are replaced. Essentially you're a whole new person every several years! Of course, there are rare occurances where cells "refuse" to die.

... this is cancer.

So cancer holds the key for immortality? Now, if we could only get cancer to not kill us.

[up]That's not how it works. The fact that some cells refuse to die is the very reason why cancer can kill you.

A cell being immortal is bad. That cell influences other cells to multiply out of control because they can no longer understand commands through exchanged genes, and it can severely harm your health.

It was meant to be interpreted as "might be beating his wife", not "may beat his wife in the near future".

The tale of Sleeping Beauty originally didn't have an actual villain! Neither did the ballet. The closest they both had was a weak old woman who was only referred to as "the aged fairy that kept to herself". Walt Disney revamped her into a vengeful overlord witch and named her Maleficent for his movie.

[up]I've already given my opinion on this issue but it bears repeating: We need to either repeal the Second Amendment or establish incredibly strict rules for obtaining guns (as in, if you or anyone in your family has any history of any kind of mental disorder, you aren't getting a gun, ever - this would outlaw me from getting a gun, but you can probably tell I don't care - mandatory gun licensing, and punishment of being found possessing a gun without being eligible for one with at least 5 years in prison, because absolutely nothing good can come from someone who isn't qualified to own a gun having one anyway). I'm sick of hearing about a new school shooting every goddamn month. When I was in college, I spent every day terrified that some nutcase would bring a murder stick to school and shoot me in the face, and I'd bleed out on the floor never being able to say goodbye to my family or tell them that I loved them one last time.

This one wasn't as big as these things usually get, in terms of casualties: one murder, followed by suicide. It's still horrible, obviously, but not as horrible as it could have been.

Needless to say, I agree that restrictions on gun licences should be extremely strict to minimise deaths from gun violence. America's murder rate is ridiculous, and a huge part of it is this extremely relaxed attitude about guns. If you applied normal gun licences and allowed grenades on airplanes as hand luggage you'd lower the violent death rates by thousands per year.

I'm not entirely convinced this isn't just a drawing and a random complicated-sounding function, though.

There's also his dashing assistant Lillie and your buddy Hau and some Rotomdex.

What happened? Why am I not allowed to post anymore!?

Johnny Depp paints watercolor portraits of any new role he gets, which makes him understand the character from a perspective outside of his own and which gains him more control over how his performance looks.

I didn't realize how insane my last game of Europa Universalis had become.

Western Europe for example:

'Rome' was a collection of Druidist Celtiberian tribes who ruled half of Hispania (And a small piece of Mauretania) under the authority of some Roman official named Aemelian II Cassius.

The rest of Hispania was ruled by The Animist Matriarchy of Galicia, and the Free-States of Vasconia and Navarre.

Oh, and Byzantium owned Aquitania.

Not dead, just feeling like it.

The alleyway behind my house ends in what can be described as a compact, impassable jungle. On the other side of that mini-forest is an wooden picket fence. There are at least two telephone/power poles somewhere in that mess. What Could Possibly Go Wrong??
