What interesting things have you only recently learned about?

To be clear, this is about things which have been true for some time and you only recently learned about, not things that only happened recently. In particular, recent deaths of celebrities and other high-profile individuals should go in the General RIP Thread.

Hey guys...and gals...I was just browsing through an XKCD strip and ended up learning that Jimmy Carter was attacked by a swimming rabbit.

That cool stringy instrument playing on this song is called a Woodrow and is manufactured only in Asheville, NC.

Literally every kind of knife except "butter" and "kitchen" are illegal to buy, sell, distribute, or import in the UK.

Same goes for firearms, excluding shotguns and some short-barrelled firearms (which also cannot be imported).

Statistically, aren't most people stabbed with kitchen knives?

@ Cruxdad. Fox hunting has been banned since 2004. Even beforehand, you were not allowed to use a firearm.

Also, you cannot obtain a firearm for "self-defence". You need a thorough background check by the police, plus a licence.

Hiroyuki Sawano also self plagiarize. I know he has the same infamous reputation as Hans Zimmer, but at least he doesn't self plagiarize...until I heard Mare today annnnd it is the same tune as Ao no Exorcist.

Spino - stuff used mostly for cutting in the kitchen can be sold, and that does include steak knives. The legislation in question mostly affects any sort of blade used primarily for combat, which steak knives are not.

There's some general exceptions to the laws, and that is whether you intend to use it for an occupation such as hospitality, or as part of a profession such as a fisherman or sailor.

And incidentally, the gun law and blade laws don't apply if they're only antiques or museum pieces, or for something like a stage performance or cosplay. In those cases you're free to use them because they likely aren't sharp enough to cause harm, or in the case of guns unable to be used as actual weapons.

Before man arrived, primates were extinct in the United States for over 20 million years.

My mother passed at 12:05 pm today. So today I learned that when they say "It's like a bad dream" it's entirely true.

I feel like I kinda hijacked the thread here. But thanks, it does mean much to me. And I wasn't kidding about the 'bad dream' stuff, the disconnect is astounding. /sigh I should really get to sleep.

Unfortunately. Her health had been in steady decline over the last few months. However she was seemingly making progress much to everyone's happiness, when she relapsed worse than ever before.

Thanks to a life time of near-death-experiences, smoking, and illness her body didn't take well to the shock. Her lungs failed, her kidneys failed and she had a stroke. That massive decline took only 3 days. We kept her alive for 2 days to have her mind scanned, in hopes of waking her and explaining the situation. But she was gone, and we let go.

Not dead, just feeling like it.

The clean version of James Blunt's "You're Beautiful" available on iTunes blanks out "fucking high" (whereas the radio version actually changes it to "flying high".
