To be clear, this is about things which have been true for some time and you only recently learned about, not things that only happened recently. In particular, recent deaths of celebrities and other high-profile individuals should go in the General RIP Thread.

There was an incident where some dipshit parents took their nine-year-old daughter to a shooting range… where she shot the instructor in the head. [tdown]

I've got no problem with teaching kids how to use firearms- I've been shooting since I was teeny- but an Uzi??? No weapon with fully automatic capability belongs in the hands of children. There's just no way in hell a little kid can control a weapon like that; it's hard enough for a grown man.

I heard about that. Everything in that story upsets me, from the innocent instructor to the no-doubt-traumatized kid.

Arranging the continents into 4 or even 2. Afro-Eurasia, America, Australia and Antarctica. Or, Afro-Eurasia and America; Australia being too small and under the ice Antarctica is even smaller.

That Fly Emirates airline whose ads you see everywhere is actually owned by the government of Dubai

Yep - USA is one of the few not to have had a flag carrier, I think.

Even North Korea has Air Koryo.

Remind me what a flag carrier is? It's an airline owned by a country right?

What good would an airline do for North Korea?!?!?!

Basically a particular transport company who either enjoys particular privileges bestowed upon them by their government, or one owned by a government.

Typically hey get to fly under the flag of their home nation, like BA flew under the British flag for quite some time.

Oh. Well the kind of CEO I'm talking about is Dick Cheney. It's just this flag carrier thing reminded me of how Saudi Arabia owns all the oil companies that operate within it, and how crooked that kinda is when you look at history , but I'm getting carried away

A group of people did a retranslation of SD Snatcher, feeling the Oasis translation wasn't up to the current par.

Oh yeah and you have to pay them to play anything more than a short demo.

Not only is this illegal (well, more obviously so than most ROM hacks), they basically come out and admit that they're only doing this because they're greedy bastards on their website:

"However, we put much time and effort in realizing this translation, which of course we did because we loved doing it, but that doesn't mean we don't like to be able to drink a few beers on your account because you're enjoying our work, either."

The legality is actually unknown. The method of distribution, an IPS patch, only contains the offsets of where the new data is to be placed and the content of that data, in this case the English text of the fan translation. ROM hacking communities generally hold this to be legal as the content of the patch is considered the patch creator's intellectual property, but this has never been tested in a court so it is unknown if it truly does count as just the patcher's IP or if it is legally considered a derivative work of the original IP. If it's the patcher's IP then selling the patch is legal, if it's a derivative then it's not unless licensed by the original IP holder. Most ROM hackers and translation patchers aren't going to test this in the face of a cease & desist.

It's actually been said by some in the England and Wales court system that unless they're offering the full product then it sort of skims the line, but is unlikely to cross it.

There's also a few who appreciate the translations done, and will usually offer some sort of reward for those who did it simply because what's produced will usually be done by fans who want to show how the character is and bring in a more organic feel to the text.

Pac-Man is Shigeru Miyamoto's favorite video game character of all time. He would have made his debut in the Smash Bros. series one game earlier at Miyamoto's request, but complications with getting his 2D form to work in 3D pushed him back to the fourth one.

I just read that Scooby Doo and the Trip of Lust thing. Couldn't help myself. It's pretty funny, gross-out stuff, but the comments thread is almost as funny. If not more so. It's a troll-fic, written like a troll-fic, and most of the folks posting took the bad thing seriously. I didn't stop laughing til I finished reading them.
