So, this new anime is to the manga like Negima?! was to the Negima manga, right?
I wonder why they don't seem to want to adapt the end of the world arc? I was under the impression that it was a popular arc and I know Athena at least was the second most popular character.
I just seriously don't think they know what they're doing. I know intellectually where it's going, but tone wise I don't know what to think. Most of the jokes were meh. And there was no Hamster or Hina. Hopefully that will be rectified later. Oh, and make whatever is going on with Ruka important other than vague symbolic stuff.
It's...an odd series, frankly. I don't know how I'm supposed to take it as. Is it supposed to be serious, humorous, or...?
God knows why. The series has been going on for 5 years and yet Hata insists on creating a new story for the anime when there's plenty of material still.
Athena is pretty damn popular even now so I am so goddamn confused why the story refuses to progress in anime.
I consider it my duty to ensure that, should you be surprised by a bear in your library, you will have ample ammunition to beat it to death. It could be they don't want to tread over old ground, like they were thinking (and I'm not trying to be patronizing or insulting here), "What if the fans get upset and complain about seeing a story already told being told again? They'd find it boring. Maybe we if market it as an original story by the creator, it'd win them over."
Of course, that isn't what the fans always want. See Trigun: Badlands Rumble for an example of that not working, and see Cowboy Bebop: Knockin' on Heaven's Door for an example that DOES work.

Maybe they are worried about getting the anime going from slice of life happy go to mood whiplash into seriousness and how anime viewers will react.
But Hata has to know fans want the Greece arc animated the most. Who doesn't want Athena animated along with the most tearjerking manly moments?
I consider it my duty to ensure that, should you be surprised by a bear in your library, you will have ample ammunition to beat it to death.Maybe they were thinking "What the fans want? Yeah, that'd be okay. But maybe if we do something completely new non-fans will want to watch it! That will mean Old fans and New fans will be watching it. Twice the audience!"
Yeah I watched it. Glad it's not just me, it really doesn't feel like Hayate, it's not funny and the character designs are slightly uglier.
It's weird. You'd think studios would realize we want adaptations to be faithful to the original manga, but they never seem to get it.
The only time I recall a studio ever going back and doing that was with Fullmetal Alchemist.
Like they think a new thing is required to draw in more audiences. But it's just alienating if it's done a shoddy manner like this. I could be wrong in the next few episodes but this whole thing barring the introduction and the intermission was just bland in terms of humor and pacing. I guess being focused around Nagi has to do with how... boring it was
Also the new character is totally unnecessary.
I consider it my duty to ensure that, should you be surprised by a bear in your library, you will have ample ammunition to beat it to death.I find it difficult to believe that they don't know that fans want to see the manga stuff animated. There's no way they could have missed that. My guess is Hata wanted to tell a story he thought of that simply doesn't fit into the manga continuity and managed to sell the idea to a studio who just figured "Eh, it's still Hayate. I'm sure it'll sell."
Black Lagoon also counts as a faithful adaptation, I'd say. Kudos for not only following on the original material, but improving on it.
For the most part, Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei got more faithful to the manga as it went on, although the original anime episodes were often some of the best. Of course, the episodic comedy nature helped, since the manga had no arcs to cover or respect until the final dozen of chapters (which I hope get adapted someday).

Yeah your guess is probably the most closest answer to the situation. It's just why? I just don't know why they sidestep that arc so much.
Bah. Everything hinges on the second episode

WHY GOD WHY.

There's no narrator at all anymore.
...oh, now that I think about it, a narrator wasn't even present, huh?
Is this seriously written by the author? It just seems so...not-his style.
Being at the Heavens, control the land. Being at the Earth, remove its keystones. And lay bare the scarlet hearts of man!WHY GOD WHYYYYYY...
He made 3 volumes of storyboards, but this is a 2-cour anime, so it's not exactly a large portion of it. Manglobe likely had to fill in most of it.

"I, Koshi Rikd— Err, I mean, Hata, hereby give my authorization—"
When does Hayate show up to kill him?
I like how this anime has brought this board back to life only just to have people depressed about it.
Great so we'll have a QUALITY story along with a QUALITY animation
I consider it my duty to ensure that, should you be surprised by a bear in your library, you will have ample ammunition to beat it to death.I'll just stick my neck out and say, I didn't mind this episode. Sure I would've preferred one that continued the manga storyline but I'm looking forward to the rest of the series.
I might have enjoyed it if it weren't called "Hayate the Combat Butler". The manga and the previous two anime have trained me to go into anything with that in the title expecting to laugh, and the anime didn't even seem to attempt to make me giggle.

Episode 1: Yep, I'm feeling a bit underwhelmed. Wasn't really funny or cool or anything, and there's a new character that I can't bring myself to care about. I'm just not sure where this show is heading but it sure is starting off dull.
EDIT: Though it does seem plot-heavier than the manga so it might pick up later on.

I do try to be optimistic on things, after all.
