Aim For The Top! really needs to get into another SRW, it's just so awesome and yet has so few appearances; Die Buster might be a little hard to include, but if they used lots of space-heavy series (Crossbone Gundam, Nadesico, J9,and Macross Plus onwards jump to mind), it could work. In fact, I really want a game that's almost entirely in space (provided they cut the whole space movement costing EN thing).

This. Also check out the first level (that is not the prologue) in Super Robot Wars Alpha that has some of the units of Aim For The Top! Gunbuster, it also has Isamu and the VF-19 making an appearance.

You know, I've never really played this before, although I'm very familiar with its style of gameplay (through various doujin pastiches).
I...just get lost in the many incarnations; I mean, where does one start?
Play Again? Y/NStart with the Original Generation series, Endless Frontier and the Aeon Genesis Super Robot Wars 3 and Super Robot Wars Alpha Gaiden translations and work your way up.

Wow. There's dialogue with everybody? Sweet, I have to try that sometime...Oh, yeah, and I've never been able to stand SuperRobotWars3. It all felt sorta flat and the gameplay was lacking a lot of things I usually associate with SRW's (post-movement ranged attacks for one thing)...Honestly, I really didn't think that much of it...
EDIT: Although, given the limitations of the era, I think I'll forgive them for the gameplay. It's still annoying how little the Super Robots effect the plot, though...

Super Robot Wars 3 was also kinda Nintendo Hard, ie the normal ending final boss required me to do some copius Save Scumming.
@ zpa: As for where to start the series, I think I went SRW 3 -> Alpha Gaiden -> OG 1/2 -> Alpha 3. And I still need to finish Z. I would reccomend starting with Alpha Gaiden or OG on the GBA. Let me know if you need/want help "obtaining" copies.
Also, there are English story summaries avaiable on GamFaqs for most of the untranslated ones. I used this to know what was going on in @3 and Z.

Fear the Gothilolions! | Anime listI started on the Original Generation games. Then I moved onto the other GBA games (A, D, J, R, etc....). And then Alpha Gaiden. I couldn't find a copy of Alpha that actually worked, oddly enough...
Also, wait a sec but did that first vid have Amuro as an enemy? And the Big O mech having 0 HP?

My troper wall's now my troper page, yay!I do not own enough consoles to play through the entire franchise, even if I had the time. "Best of.." recs plz?
EDIT: Actually, scratch that. I've got emulators for everything but the PS 2 (which I've got), and DS (which I haven't); I'll take zzzdragon's offer up on locating the games though. Time is still an issue, sadly.

Play Again? Y/NUhm, well, I'm sort of limited already having no access to a PS 2 and half of the better games that I've heard about (Alpha 2 and 3, Impact, Z, MX, Original Generations, etc..) being on it. I think I'll recommend starting with the Original Generation (GBA) games. Or the Alpha series (PS for 1 and Gaiden; PS 2 for 2 and 3) if you want a game that's a more typical SRW.

My troper wall's now my troper page, yay!-revels in the awesomeness of his PS2 emulator-
@ zpa: Well, where would you like to start? catchthesun and I share pretty much the same view. The nice thing about the gba OG games is that they are only like 40-ish stages, while the console ones are about sixty or so. The gba games do tend to be a bit harder. They also don't require the vast-breadth of mecha viewing to truly appreciate the way the console games do.
Also, a bit off-topic, but what would the interest level be if I were to say, liveblog Battle Moon Wars?
Fear the Gothilolions! | Anime listI'd follow it; it's a great game. (Then that thread I started when Methuselah was a boy might finally see some action).
Play Again? Y/NThe OG games are the only ones I've made any significant progress in, in part because they've got a professional translation and no slide cards or mod chips are required to play them—plus portable games are so easy to pick up and play when you've only got like five minutes. They seem like a fine place to start—they've certainly whetted my appetite for more. Endless Frontier didn't cut it for me.

Endless Frontier didn't really feel like a SRW game to me. It felt more like a Final Fantasy game, really (you know, one of those wandering RPG's)...
My troper wall's now my troper page, yay!Not to bash on it too hard, but it felt more like an RPG Maker game to me. There was just something about it that didn't feel finished. Almost amateurish.

Hmmm. I think OG seems to be the way forward. How do the graphics compare to say, BMW?
Play Again? Y/NThe GBA games, which is where you suggested I start. Sensible, as my machine can emulate it perfectly.
Play Again? Y/N- Super Robot Taisen 4 (SNES) - S Gundam
- Super Robot Taisen 4 (SNES) - ExS Gundam
- Super Robot Taisen Neo - Random Final Attack Part 1
- Super Robot Taisen Neo - Random Final Attack Part 2
- SRW A Portable Dragonar Lifter units + Ashsaber all attacks
- Shin Super Robot Taisen - Shining Gundam Vs Wing Gundam
- Super Robot Wars Alpha 3 - Kotetsu Jeeg

You know, it's a bit embarassing, now that I admit it, but I have a tendency to mistake the Dragonar units for Gundams. It's the shape of the head, I swear....
Oh, by the way, just wondering but who's your favourite OG character? Mine's, well, Ibis Douglas. There's just something really appealing about unloading massive numbers of missiles into your opponent. That and her theme song is made of love...
