Seconded: purple Jones Soda brings back happy childhood memories. I am pleased!

I'd be tempted to track down Jack Chick one day, perhaps ask him to sign a copy of Dark Dungeons, pull out a copy of The Dungeon Master's Manual Manual and use the tracts to replace my current book mark. Hilarity Ensues.

The thing about Christianity is that it's not supposed to be about all the dogma or ceremony. It's about forgiveness of sin. pvtnum11 is much better at being a Christian than Jack Chick is.

The whole Catholic vs Protestant thing is what led to the violence in Ireland, right? I'm sure I'm guilty of over generalization, but anyway... It's quite nasty how differences in doctrine* can lead to bloodshed among people who would otherwise be in their right mind.

But yes. The whole thing is forgiveness of sin, and we're all guilty. It's just a matter of us being willing to own up to it and ask for that forgiveness.

  • And to be clear, there ARE differences in which scriptures are more important, what scriptures really mean, which books of the Bible should be included, if it's the Bible at all that is the revealed word, so on and so forth. I do have a growing list of question for when I do get to see the Lord, like, what's the special seasonings for KFC. You know, important stuff. grin

As someone once said on some forum I can't remember, discuss Politics and Religion at your own peril. I have been head-butted in the face by a drunk guy after he smashed the 40-oz over his face. I felt bad for the guy, really. He must have needed at least fifty stitches to put his face back together, he's lucky he didn't lose an eye in the process.

To be fair, the Protestant thing was because Martin Luther thought the Catholic Priesthood were abusing their religious power for financial gain. Considering that the Jewish Temple abusing power for financial gain was the only time Jesus got fighting mad...

And afterwards other people split from Luther's movement. And then others. And so on...

There were already splits within christian "Canon" long before that.

The Gnostic school was one favoured by one of the popes, who proffessed a belief in the "demiruge" though perhaps not quite to the extent of the Cathars.

The "split" in Luthors movement simply made heresies a more reliable place to stand, the Lollards in England if they had been born a few hundred years later, would have been considered less controversial than Luther.

The main problem with whittling faiths down to their componenet parts is that they sound good, but are really really hard to create something like that in real terms, the Catholic Church of the middle ages was mainly a place where you could pay money or join associations to pray for the previous members of said fraternity in purgatory.

To me a functional religion, one that gives comfort and helps people to grieve for their loved ones/ friends that have died, seems to be a far better one than a lot of the current "high and mighty" stupidly theological/literal interpretative schools.

I'm Protestant. I think that at the time, the Catholic church needed very much to have someone like him come along and call them out. But things have changed since then, and if you disagree, debate, don't kill each other.

So Yeah.

Luthor did have to do it, though he could have done it better than saying "Faith must trample underfoot all reason, sense and understanding".

That is my definition of a "BAD THING TO SAY", protestantism is also not restricted to Luthor, Calvin as well, and indeed a great deal of protestant churches were set up with the mind to get rid of indulgences.

Personally the Cathlic church would have had a better time of it (not that thats a good think mark you, but it would have been stronger) had the Gregorian reforms never happened, and priests below Bishops were able to Marry. At least that would have given connection between the Laity and the ecchlisastical spheres that would have ensured a greater sense of community, and one without a sense of betrayal when the priest (inevitably) slept with someone.

I never fully understood how chasteness could be argued for Catholic priests. Monks certainly there is a historical precedent of holy men going out of the world completly, but when even Jesus' disciples are married... well.

Plus, well for the obsession that an awful lot of churches put on us all being "sinners" I dislike the idea that two people who wish to know each other well should have to stop till they are tied for the rest of their days to each other.

Sorry, I am a bit of a Bertrand Russel Afficianado, so quite a lot of my stuff I get from himtongue

I think it makes sense to wait for marriage.

But there's no reason you shouldn't enjoy it when you do have it.

It's supposed to be enjoyed, you ever read Song of Songs?

Heavenly Mother?

But my point is, in these times I won't condemn those who don't wait, but I want to wait myself. My secondary point is sex is supposed to be a gift from god.

The celibacy thing for priests is basically taking what Paul wrote a bit too seriously. Peter was married, Paul wasn't.

I'm risking getting flamed, but our church has a rule for a couple that comes in and it's clear that they're not married but they're co-habitating:

  • Option 1) Get married; our Pastor will gladly do it for free.
  • Option 2) Separate and sort stuff out, maybe they find that they're not the ideal couple, or they do end up getting married, their call. *Option 3) if either first options don't appeal, go to another Church. If you don't want to go to our Church, no biggie, but we can't have a bit of leaven leavaning up the whole lump, so to speak.

...something to be said about being able to say "I love you so I'll wait". I'm glad my wife did, and she's glad I did, made the honeymoon that much more special. For that matter, our first kiss was on our wedding day. Meant tons to her.

pvtnum: It seems fair enough, as long as they don't insist on telling non-members how to live their lives — a problem lots of more rabid churches have.

As for waiting till marriage, well, I was ready to get married and have kids when I was, like, 13. And I'm a guy. So if I do meet someone, and we click, it won't be that long of a courtship. :D

Why does a thread about Jack Chick keep inspiring meaningful disscussion on Christianity? It seems counterproductive.
