It's Harry Potter. I kind of assumed that people would know about the magic system. In universe stuff would be best for the trinkets, but if it's not too overpowered I'm okay with something original.

Go for it. Just remember that the wizards will have a harder time swapping out items than muggles.

How is that possible? Anyway, in that case you can probably read the wikipedia article on the books. You don't need to know the characters, just a broad outline of the universe. Having a muggle who's genuienly confused by the goings on would be cool, but methinks you're leaning towards the wizarding side?
