I was wondering if anyone knew of other anime series (or for that matter, science fiction books) similar to Ergo Proxy- the idea of like a really weird world with some cyberpunk elements. I get the impression Kinos Journey might fit this, and do plan on checking that out, but not sure. I forget the name, Technohaze I think was mentioned as being similar on Anime News Network, but I've heard that has a ridiculously depressing ending, something I'd rather avoid.

Texhnolyze - haven't seen it, but it's by the makers of Serial Experiments Lain, which is quite possibly what you're looking for.

Kino's Journey is not really cyberpunk... it's more like steampunk in most places.

As for books, probably Philip K Dick.

Texhnolyze is definitely an Ergo Proxy lookalike, albeit one with a darker tone (or so I heard). Blame! is likewise bizarre cyberpunk dystopia, with the Bizarre Alien Biology and Mind Screw turned to the max.

Serial Experiments Lain is an odd one, probably to your liking if you're on the same track.

I'm trying to think of other Cyberpunk and Post-Cyberpunk works that meet your criteria, and I cannot. farr too specific, methinks. Alas!

Texhnolyze is like Ergo Proxy, except it's pervasively hopeless and bleak, harder to understand, and with less sense of direction. That being said, it's certainly an original anime.

BLAME!, Biomega, and Abara (all manga, all by the same person, ignore the "anime" version(s) of BLAME!) are kinda similar in tone and in far-post apocalyptic setting, but with a bit less (revealed) plot, more wandering, and more really cool violence. Less mind-screw too. They still capture the nice malaise of the wandering characters who don't know who they are that Ergo Proxy has going for it. The only problem is getting your hands on them since the death of One Manga and the revocation of their legal sale licensing outside of Japan.
