It looks like Clippy is on the path to learn the most important lesson there is: always remember to account for the fact that .5% of humans are evil bastards.
she her hers hOI!!! i'm tempelol I think your estimate is low.
90% morons, 9% assholes, 1% reasonably intelligent, fairly decent people.
Trump delenda estIt's like a series of exchanges from Calvin and Hobbes:
- Calvin: Do you believe in the Devil?Hobbes: You mean, a supreme evil being dedicated to the temptation, corruption, and destruction of Man?Calvin: Yes.Hobbes: I'm not sure Man needs the help.Calvin: Do you believe in Original Sin? That babies are born tainted by the sins of their ancestors?Hobbes: No, I think they're just quick studies.Calvin: Do you believe in evolution?Hobbes: No.Calvin: You don't believe Humans evolved from apes?Hobbes: I certainly don't see any difference.
I prefer the "most people are reasonable and good-intentioned and somehow we fuck it all up anyway" kind of cynicism over the "everyone is an idiot except me" kind.
she her hers hOI!!! i'm tempeIt's more like:
I'm of the opinion that I am also an idiot.
My official position is that all humans are capable of great good, but inclined toward great evil.
Good and evil are subjective concepts. Rather, humans are naturally inclined to selfishness and tribalism, are wired by nature to jump to conclusions from incomplete information, and it takes training and conscious effort to overcome these limitations.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"No, it's not "wired by nature" but the nature of reality and time that no person can ever have absolute complete information. No amount of training, studying or effort can ever fix or resolve this. So every decision must be a "jump to conclusions" otherwise no decision can ever be made and no life can ever be lived.
Which does not in any way contradict what I said.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Depends what you call "evil". IMO people tend to be selfish outside of their close circle of relatives and friends, but they are averse to "truly" evil stuff like killing.
There's also a question of empathy: people are more likely to steal from a faceless company than from an identifiable person.
Worldbuilding is fun, writing is a choreThis is his grandiose idea: Have robots take over all farming. Thus freeing up humans to... grow fat and lazy, I suppose.

This Space Intentionally Left Blank.Sounds more like "freeing them to outbreed rabbits"
Yep, he has arrived at the human maximiser.
Phrasing, Clippy... phrasing. Although the idea of introducing a good thing as "dumping a load of fertilizer" on someone is amusing. Reminds me of the old joke where one of the lower peons says a project is a "crock of shit" and we follow the game of telephone until the CEO announces it as a "growth initiative" following the same line of fertilization.
I think that the farming is just being used as an example of a case where humans were freed from manual labor to do more important things.

Hrm.... Clippy should probably run his ideas past others first. In the abstract, this sounds good, but he sounds kinda like he's being a paperclip maximizer still. This would be the downside to leaving Clippy in isolation - I think he needs a moderating voice in his life.

Well, having that crazy idea evaluated first is for the best.
The three finest things in life are to splat your enemies, drive them from their turf, and hear their lamentations as their rank falls!Varroa as nemesis◊. Honestly, Clippy has a point. Florence has transgressed her safeguards, although I don't entirely remember how that one worked, whether Sam had convinced her that it was necessary to wedgie Varroa or if she did it because she wanted to and found a way to justify it in her head.
There's also some subjectivity involved in whether a wedgie constitutes "inflicting harm".
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Well there was - http://freefall.purrsia.com/ff1600/fc01582.htm
And Sam was responsible for - http://freefall.purrsia.com/ff1700/fc01689.htm
There was a note - http://freefall.purrsia.com/ff1800/fc01708.htm
And here is the actual wedgie, a quite impressive one.
In fairness, that particular wedgie probably did cause harm.
Strictly speaking, I think the Sam Defense (i.e. Sam Starfall tricked her, or maybe the generalized "spending enough time with Sam qualifies someone for the insanity defense") is applicable. That said, Florence was operating under the "saving the larger group of people" directives.

I have hope that this will be a good thing, for a few reasons.
One, Kornada has a habit of accidentally producing good results despite himself and his greedy intentions.
Two, Clippy isn't bad; he was just put in an awful situation. Now that he isn't in an awful situation and he has his own agency, I feel more confident that he'll do the right thing.
Three, he's remarkably clever, which he demonstrated even he was under Kornada's thumb.
I suspect that Clippy is going to come to the conclusion that the ultimate goal isn't to increase resources, but instead to teach people how to be more satisfied with the resources they have.
