Considering how nowadays hacking attacks are made on/over the Internet of Things (aka refridgerators, smart T Vs etc), I think the BN series was not that crazy in that regard.

Also, yeah, there's a lot of Values Resonance at play now

@Rob: Webconnect Ovens are small hat when we have IP Cameras being used as baby monitors, webconnect toilets, and Philips has smart lights with tiny embedded systems on a chip that hook into the web as well.

...Seriously, web-controlled lights?! And that's not going into 'ghetto security turrets' like the web-connected juryrigging linked to a mounted gun currently used for hunting (and is probably illegal in some places with hunting laws).

(Also hacking into some hipster's Smart Toilet to run their water and power bill up by flushing nonstop is probably possible too)

Now I'm disappointed that there wasn't a hacking attempt through a toilet that you had to foil in a BN game.

At the very least there was the obligatory tutorial fight in one at the beginning of BN 6, but that one was "just" a random virus

That's nothing, there's a whole Internet of Things with web connections.

There's a doorbell with a web-connected IP camera (a HD one at that), a plushie with a VOIP phone stuck inside it, a thermostat that can be monitored online, an actual coffee machine which can really get linked to the Web (and yes you can jack into a coffee machine in Battle Network), and yes there is a real web-connected oven, a web-connected motion/gesture controller for you house full of Smart Devices, Smart Ventilation, air quality monitors, even a breathalyzer...

And most of these things have little or no protection and so are ridiculously easy to compromise.

Capcom's is planning to revive several of their dormant franchises next year. I actually kind of hope the Battle Network series will make a comeback, because of how relevant that game's setting has become in recent years.

All this talk makes me regret the fact that I never got around to playing much of Battle Network (played a bit of the DS version of 5 because that was all I could find at the time). Although the whole cyber crime thing kept me up all night, lol.

Got into the franchise proper through Star Force and ZX. Need to finish the Classic and X series one of these days. Been years since I've played either. Maybe after I finish replaying Zero...

Not sure what to make of that upcoming cartoon. Man of Action is making it, right?

The most Battle Network-esque bit of netcrime I heard about recently: Some blackhat jerkface hacked into a baby monitor with a VOIP passthrough and said rude things to a baby.

Also the password security of IP Toilets is garbage

So, the whole "we love Mega Man Legends" thing isn't just in North America, right?

Because Japanese game magazine/website GameSpark did a poll on what Capcom IP their readers would like to see revived. Mega Man Legends topped the poll with over 200 votes.

Now this is a crazy thought, but what if Capcom goes and announces Mega Man Legends 3 or, at the very least, a remastering of the first two MML games for Nintendo Switch (or PS 4)?

Don't get my hopes up. I'm still bitter over what they did with Legends 3.

Maybe they just wanted to get rid of Inafune first so they wouldn't have to pay him.

[up] Yeah, there was all that talk about how he wanted Capcom to tone down or outright get rid of the Japanese elements in their games, which led to the "not really something we fondly look back on" video game that is DmC: Devil May Cry and the inclusion of Bad Box Art Mega Man in Street Fighter X Tekken, right?

Or am I misremembering that second one?

The second one was supposed to be a tie-in joke to the release of Mega Man Legends 3. Hence BBA Mega Man having a warped version of Trigger's backstory.

BBA Mega Man was just a poorly-timed joke more than anything. Considering he was previously slated to be playable in Mega Man Universe, and the reception to him being there was much warmer.

I doubt it had anything to do with Inafune's westernization mindset like DmC did.

[nja]And, uh, the Legends 3 bit too.[nja]

Considering he offered to come back to help finish the game even when he was gone and they turned him down, I truly believe they wanted to get rid of him that badly, and erase his influence.

Though I might be being a bit biased myself.

Whatever the case, they are moving on without him it seems.

To be fair, given how Mighty No. 9 turned out, maybe that was a good thing.

Oh I don't know.

Mighty No 9 is him without any supervision.

I'd assume that even with him running the show, there'd be people watching him during the process to keep shit like that from happening. Plus, he'd have a budget, which means he'd be able to focus on making the game instead of gathering the money to get the game.

There'd be a whole bunch of guys who'd could take care of that stuff so he could just do the game proper.

That being said, I doubt Capcom is gonna bother. I'm assuming they have their own plans from the series that's free of Inafune's vision, for better or for worse.

I've given a "The Reason You Suck" Speech to Inafune many times on this site, so I won't repeat myself. All I'll say here is that Capcom is, imo, able to do much better things without him. I'm actually intrigued by what they have planned for the future of this franchise, given their comments on reviving their dormant ones.

So putting this here because the Megman Fanfiction thread is still pretty quiet:

Any thoughts on a story where Zero is discovered by Repliforce instead of Sigma.

Maybe around the time that Mega Man X 4 would have taken place, though I can decide if he'll infect anyone like he did Sigma, or if the longer stewing time caused it to remain dormant...

Oh! I got it. Repliforce is more cautious then Sigma, and whatever pod Zero is sealed in is kept closed. As a result, they study him from within and keep him contained and discover then Virus within his systems, thereby avoiding infection, so the Wily Virus spreads out on his own and leaves his body, convincing them he's no threat. As a result, Zero is a member of Repliforce instead of the Maverick hunters, and more to the point, Sigma is never infected by his Virus, thus meaning he never goes Maverick.

Wily's Virus might actually still play a factor in the story however, infecting multiple Reploids during the events of X1-3 just like in the original canon, with Repliforce and the Maverick Hunters actively working together to deal with the issue. I have no idea who the main villain will be with Sigma being a hero (and still leading the Mavericks with X serving under him), but I'm thinking of having there be multiple infiltrators in both Repliforce and the Maverick Hunters (it was Magma Dragoon who initially caused Sky Lagoon, and he was a hunter) giving the former side a much better reason to be distrustful of the hunters authority to make them disarm when Sky Lagoon happens.

While it's not my thing, I might put greater emphasis on Zero's relationship with Iris (since he's actually part of the same group as her) and X's with Alia (though I don't know if it's ever been overtly said she has any feelings for him, at least as much as Iris does for Zero).

Still a lot of holes in this one, but it's on my mind.

I have to admit, I find the idea really fascinating, and while it's a bad case of Shameless Self-Promotion to push my own idea in a thread that I started in the first place, I wanted to get some reaction for it. Feel free to give thoughts in either thread.

It's an intriguing idea, but would Repliforce exist in a timeline where Sigma had never been corrupted? It might have a different rationale.

I admit, I'd have to fudge somethings. Maybe Cain creates them a little sooner then he does in canon. If the Xtreme games are anything to go on, they existed since the end of X3, but it's possible that Cain could decide to create them sooner after the the initial incidents with the Mavericks (remember, they lost a lot of hunters to the virus, including Sigma, their best hunter, Zero, their other best hunter, and a whole bunch of hunters who were turned by the former).

There's a lot of wiggle room for making them sooner. The only problem is...if Sigma never turns, what causes the first Maverick uprising.

....damn. That's a pretty big hole.
