I think the Matrix and Blade also had an influence on the series
You're going to pay a price for every bloody thing you do and everything you don't do. You don't get to choose to not pay a price.Man playing DMC 1 it's absolutely amazing just how bombastic the series has become.
Like the craziest weapon is a gun that's fires energy blasted fuels by the D-Trigger energy or the Sparda sword that transforms into a scythe or pole-arm though you only use the scythe while throwing it.
Compare that to Nevan or the Pandora.
It's quite the experience.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."Biochemical outbreak in the first game limited to a mansion in the wilderness? Try an entire city in the sequel. A fighting tournament to determine the world's greatest fighter? By the sixth game there'll be a war going on with no relation to the tournament whatsoever. A four-bladed lightsaber in the first game? Try a backpack that becomes a set of spider arms with lightsabers on the end.
It's Serial Escalation or bust when it comes to Japanese videogame franchises.

I'M MR. MEESEEKS, LOOK AT ME!That last one just makes me think GENERAL KENOBI.
And the reason I like this kind of games so much.
Anyone else getting Metal Gear Rising vibes from Nero's theme?
Not in the slightest.
Let the joy of love give you an answer! Check out my book!Nero and Raiden have quite a bit in common.
:)
Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters.Honestly, the theme does rival Rules of Nature for me in terms of awesome battle themes.
And yeah, one of my favorite things about the series has always been how creative the weaponry you get is. I mean, you get over the course of the series:
A sword that has a motorcycle-esque rev system.
A pair of wings with penetrating needle attacks.
Several sets of gauntlets and greaves that each have their own type of element.
A box with multiple forms for devastation.
A literal electric guitar.
A rocket launcher with grapple capabilities.
A katana that can cut through space itself.
A pair of living scimitars with the power of wind and fire.
A set of three ice-infused nunchaku.
A double barreled revolver.
Several laser weapons.
And that's not even getting into the more conventional arsenal selections. And they all feel different to each other (with the exception of maybe the gauntlets and greaves) and each have their own strengths and weaknesses depending on the situation.
Seriously, what other action game gives this much in terms of creative weapon types? Only really Bayonetta and Ninja Gaiden I can think of comes close, and even they fall short.

Well once a game gets older it starts naturally getting more comfortable it what it can do & so it decides to go "Lets have some fun" more each installment.
Though its a thought that makes you sad as if it wasn't for DMC imagine how much more bombastic the series would have become. Sure its nice to finally get 5 but it was really held off for a long time cause of the misguided need to Westernize shit back then.
Damn DMC is a real letdown coming after 4. Seriously all it has is a generic scythe, axe, & glaive. How lame is that?
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."Thanks a lot for setting Capcom on that poor Westernizing trend Inafune.
At any rate though, I can't wait to see what kind of awesome new toys you get to play with in this game. Nero's robot arm already opens up all kinds of possibilities.

Id say Bayo's weaponry is more creative. God of War is also fairly creative.
@Naspah could you explain a bit why the theme reminds you of Metal Gear?

Well, let's see, Bayo 1 has handguns, rocket launchers, ice skates, a katana, a lightsaber, a whip, fire/lighting claws, shotguns, and I think one or two more.
Aside from the ice skates and the fire/lighting claws, nothing there is all that creative. Can't comment on Bayo 2 since I haven't played it.
Let the joy of love give you an answer! Check out my book!Yeah Inafune... Really screwed up didn't he? When he left Capcom basically immediately canceled Megaman Legends 3, none of the westernized games Capcom pushed out ended up being for the better and then he went and made Mighty Number 9. Le sigh.
I'm imagining Dante and Bayonetta using eachother's weaponry now and it works well.

Bleye knows Sabers. We really need a DMC x Bayonetta game. Assuming that the universe can handle that much distilled awesomeness, of course.
Let the joy of love give you an answer! Check out my book! They both almost made it into Project X Zone 2. Missed opportunity for sure.
I'm sure they'll meet eventually. Maybe Raiden and 2B can come too.
Bleye knows Sabers.Pandora is one of the coolest and most creative weapons in an action game ever.
Don't forget Sai-fung for Bayonetta's creative weapons. I find them cooler than Cerberus and are only matched by the Vigoorian Flail from NG in style.
Oh yeah, those are the shotgun nunchucks, right?
Let the joy of love give you an answer! Check out my book!Kamiya had the chance to allow Bayonetta in DMC 4 IIRC and disallowed it, wanting to have them meet 'on his terms'. He says he deeply regrets that decision because that interaction would have been so cool for the fans to see, and he'd jump at the chance to include Bayonetta in Project X Zone 3.
"...in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach."Bayo does have gun-chucks and literal ice skates, so points there. Even so, DMC still has much more creative weaponry imo, since much of the weapons in Bayo are basically just modified versions of things like katanas and basic firearms.

To elaborate on the above, while the Bayonetta weapons have large movesets, alot of them are simple combo chains, and modified versions of the base special moves Bayonetta can unlock. Devil May Cry gives them a handful of distinct moves (Which get increased with Swordmaster) that make for a more unique playstyle overall.
A corpse should be left well enough alone...I'm always a little disappointed when I play that Bayo's default moveset is just kicks and punches. It's only a matter of preference, I agree, but it just doesn't feel as cool as wielding Rebellion to me.
"...in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach."Sometimes, less is more, and in the case of DMC vs Bayo weaponry and moves, that to me is most certainly the case, as every weapon in the former feels different to each other due to having a smaller but more unique moveset, while the latter has a lot of combos for each weapon, but they tend to overlap with each other.
Not as much with bayo 2, and I assume that will be the case with Bayo 3, too.
The high amount of combo chains is fine with me, as it feels more intuitive and more comfortable for me to do so.
Dante just feels too slow in comparison for me to appreciate him.

They alongside Vash from Trigun and Vincent from Final Fantasy VII are all based on cobra in some way (Wearing red, having a seductive personality, though no always, and having an unusual arm of sort, though not always).
