Jim Moran (D-VA) says military service isn't "public service"

Don't most definitions of "Public Services"/ "Civil Services" exclude the military? There might be a cross- Atlantic translational issue but it sounds like a trip up between trying to say "Public Services" and the broader concept of doing a public service.

I always thought public service was a blanket term that covered civil service and military service (and other things).

I have generally heard "public service" used to refer to being in government. Just like I doubt many people consider serving in the military to be similar to being a bureaucrat, I do not believe many people see military service as very comparable to being a legislator. I do not know if that is the best way to define that term though.

Unless I am vastly misunderstanding the term "public service" Mr. Moran is an idiot.

I've always thought of "public service" as a "getting paid by the government but not getting elected" sort of thing.

Well that's a rather misleading term, then.

Except...Blatant Lies.

Nice job taking Mr. Moran out of context Tom. Frankly, I was unsurprised when I actually did some research that you did. That was a Faux news source you cited (Which is notorious for this). Never once did Moran say that military service does not qualify as a civil service.

The REAL statement of Mr. Moran...

What they do is they find candidates, usually stealth candidates. That haven't been in office, haven't served, performed in any kind of public service. My opponent is typical, frankly.

So, when you look at the full context of the quote, it appears as though he refers to elected office specifically. Not of civil servants.

This is typical dirty politics. Republicans shifting focus away from the issues by using smear tactics.

That's still a very vague statement.

By the way, you really need to stop calling Tom a liar. It's flamey and I'd rather you not get banned, since y'know, RP and all.

Well that's not what I expected. I assumed that the quote was referring to Al Green.

The problem with this quote is you can interpret it two ways;

one way is

What they do is they find candidates, usually stealth candidates. That haven't been in office, [pause] haven't served, [pause] performed in any kind of public service. My opponent is typical, frankly.

the other way is-

What they do is they find candidates, usually stealth candidates. That haven't been in office, [and thus] haven't served, performed in any kind of public service. My opponent is typical, frankly.

subtle but important difference.

I don't think that was sufficiently out of context.

@Spain. But the fact remains that Moran did not say that military service isn't a public service (As the title of this thread implies). You could say that he implied that, based upon a loose interpretation of his words, but that would be it.

No, he didn't, but that still doesn't make Tom A LIRAR. It would make him wrong, but not deliberately so.

However, Moran’s opponent happens to be Col. Patrick Murray (US Army-Ret.), who served 24 years in uniform, was deployed to four different combat zones, including Baghdad, as part of the 2007 troop surge under Gen. David Petraeus, and was even shot at by foreign combatants.

Here commando since you failed to indicate the context this applied to.

Now look at what he said again.

So, two articles are written that pretty much state that Mr. Moran thinks that military service isn't public service.

Seems like a clear cut statement to me.

Regarding how right that position is, I'd have to disagree. It's not political experience (unless you happen to go for rank above Major, as you start needing support in Congress to advance to flag rank)) really, so that might be where Mr. Moran is coming from - it's not public electable office type of work, and I suppose that he holds that in higher regard than military service.

Or rather than he holds public electable legislative work more relevant to, well, public electable legislative work.

Pvt Num 11:I am hoping that is what he meant. The needing more work with political entities. If not then the phrase comes across as rather arrogant and dismissive.

If he'd added the word "relevant" to his statement, it would have made much more sense.

Inexact phrasing, perhaps, in that it's not public, elected service in a lawmaking capacity, which is probably what he meant, but is most emphatically a public service in the sense that it is performing a service on behalf of the public. So yeah, not heinous, just being inexact at an inopportune time, which is dangerous in politics.
