^^ As a reward for being good at the game?

I've played a game or two like that, Edmania, but can't recall anything outside of Bangai-O off the top of my head. Bangai-O only kind of counts as a shooter, though.

The 1944 clone on the iPhone's pretty sweet too, although it proves my point that dodging is more important than shooting.

Not if you're playing Kamui, where your rechargeable death beam can destroy enemy shots!

What's 1cc mean exactly? I've got the context but I don't know the implications.

It's an especially nasty abbreviation that means "one credit clear", I surmise.

I'd honestly never seen it used before today, but it spoke for itself, I felt.

While comparing shmups to Touhou is a little silly, it does have an aesthetic and cinematic quality that a lot of Bullet Hell games sadly lack. A good deal of them are just "I RAPE YOU WITH DENSE CLOUDS OF FAST THINGS NOW BAHAHA", but Touhou has a kind of visual appeal on top of that.

Ikaruga is a damn close competitor in that regard though.

@DYRE: Isn't beating the game on Normal itself enough of an accomplishment? It took me months.

Touhou's visuals can be nauseating at times. Especially anything before PCB. I cannot play E So D without getting physically sick. The others I can...usually...

^Months? Damn...

^^^^ Really, that aspect of Touhou kind of just feels silly to me. It's like "Oh hey look at these awesome particles aren't they pretty? Oh, I guess you should try dodging some of them. Or something."

^^ Not to ZUN, evidently. That's how he thinks the game should be. And it's his right to think so, being his game and all.

Oh, it recharges. If it didn't I was going to ask "Why not just fire it all the time?"

It's honestly kind of overpowered regardless. In addition to taking out shots, it completely wrecks whatever else it hits. It's pretty much a renewable bomb, which also typically destroy enemy shots, but don't come back except as pickups.

This is honestly one of the things I find most inane about Touhou.

When it comes to the whole "Magical Girl shmup" thing, I greatly prefer Eden's Aegis to Touhou.

But I prefer BWR+ to them both, because you can be the Blue Hope, and when playing as the Blue Hope, all arguments are rendered invalid.

Also, I think Ikaruga's got a better visual style, by far.

Remilia is a bitch. Made worse by the problem I mentioned earlier. That game is like willingly accepting disorientation with a smile. Now playing as Remi in 8 is fun though...

Patterns and Touhou: I like the patterns as they are fun to look at when watching others play.

I'm too busy staring at my character to look at the patterns usually.

Also for some reason I can't think of the dot in the middle of the character or so as the hitbox so I always think my entire sprite has to dodge things.

I agree, but I also think Ikaruga gets a bit too much attention over other great shooters, in this regard and others; Ikaruga's a little too slow paced for me at points. It's got Raiden (which I'm also a huge fan of, don't get me wrong)'s "leisurely stroll" thing going on a lot.
