Okay, so I'm working on a team of superheroes that aren't in the same class as The Avengers or the Justice League, but about a level down. So far, I've got the following characters:

But, since seven seems to be the magical number, I'm tempted to have another team member. I just can't think what hero archetype (if any) he or she should be. Any ideas?

Embroiled in slave rebellion, I escaped crucifixion simply by declaring 'I am Vito', everyone else apparently being called 'Spartacus'.

Look at it in terms of team chemistry and roles that need to be filled.

The Kid? Young, new to the team, eager to prove himself to the others; classic seventh in the Magnificent Seven Samurai team. Heat powers, maybe? Literal hothead, and a "fiery" personality.

A mercenary, who's only in it for the gold and the glory. A Badass Normal douche who doesn't mind breaking rules and laws of war to get the job done.

A fallen badass, who used to be the baddest dude around, until he fell on hard times for unspecified reasons.

A desperate man, maybe choosing between this job and a life sentence.

If you're set on power types, not team roles, some suggestions: Speed, shapeshifters, growing and shrinking, energy/heat blasts, tactical genius/badass normal, invulnerable/quick healing types, elemental powers...

Thanks for the all fish!

  • Well, the teleporter/gadgeteer is essentially the kid of the team; either that, or she just doesn't age as quickly as regular folk.

  • The cyborg's an ex-con working with the team in exchange for a pardon (he's the Big Guy, who got "upgraded" without his consent).

  • The black ops supersoldier, since his powers are on the low end of the power spectrum, is the closest to a Badass Normal the team's got.

Six is a good number, too.

Looks like you have a SixStudentClique here. Basically in the same order as well, although you have two muscles, and no pretty one. Maybe add a pretty one and make one of your muscles (probably the cyborg) into your seventh by making him the TokenEvilTeammate.

It also looks like a Five-Man Band with a Sixth Ranger. A Badass Normal female spy as a second chick (after the Gadgeteer) would round out the lineup.

Maybe a magnificent bastard that doesn't quite fit with the team dynamics but is the one that manages to get them to do what is needed.

It comes. The corrupter comes. Don't let it touch the tower lest all reality crumble.
