Think of it this way: the Pattern is shifting to ensure that the Ta'veren will change the world with their actions (i.e. that they'll be Main Characters of history)...but that doesn't guarantee that they'll change it in the way they want.

The problem comes from the fact that there seems to be an arbitrary consciousness out there that's messing with the Pattern and restructuring it, but since I don't know whether it's benevolent or evil, I can't say anything.

And before you say that's the point, it ends up undermining the villain's efforts that I CAN see

I wouldn't say "consciousness". As will become very clear the more you see of the Ta'veren effects, trying to assign it a motivation other than ensuring that the Main Characters of history actually change things in some way is like trying to assign rules to the ordering of a well-shuffled deck of cards: if you squint hard enough and allow for complete insanity, you might be able to make it work, but it's more reasonable to accept that there's simply a jumble of red cards and black cards in equal amounts.

Now on page 694

They've made it through the Ways and they're now in the borderlands

... how often in this series is someone gonna say that they need to do something because the plot pattern plot says so? -_-

Sort of, Mat has insane good luck/bad luck (though only after the dagger thingy is resolved, which will be a while yet), he also has some other stuff happen to him, but that would spoilers :P

Btw, Ba'al latest dream appearance (the one with the 3 figurines) was a HUGE improvement over what I've seen of him lately.

He actually felt in control

and I really like the dagger subplot. Especailly how he seems so worried now everytime he starts feeling suspicious.

Mat didn't have his dagger on him when he was in the bath. So it isn't a physical connection (unless he HAS to touch every few hours/minutes)

or is it an Area of effect thing?

It's closer to an area of affect type thingy, and now especially it's tied to him, to remove it will take some...potent...weaving of the One Power.

What happens if you take it away from him?

I know he'd die, but how? Abruptly keel over dead? Burst into flames? Go insane? Pop out of existence?

Relatively slowly he just wither and die :P

But seriously, the whole point of the borderland kingdoms is that someone has to live in these stretches of land to hold off the blight, and a series of badass warrior cultures have developed to do just that. :P

That having been said I would NEVER want to live in the Borderland if I was a Randlander.

I could be wrong, but didn't GRRM make a reference to Wheel Of Time at some point in ASOIAF?

House Toland has a great dragon biting it's own tail and are said to believe that "time has no beginning nor ending"

If you ask me, most of the Dornish are a shout out the Wheel Of Time, because they bare some serious resemblances to the Aiel :P

Yes, at varying speeds (anywhere from one day to years) but gradually.

But, as is pointed out that man or women once you start channeling you might as well try stop drinking water and eating food as stop channeling.

And in theory, yes. :P
