If anyone here is more familiar with tabletop RP Gs than me, would you rather level up and pick a "skill" or "feat" or whatever the game calls it from a list, or would you rather take "quests" that gives you a skill when you complete it?

For example, if you want your character to learn how to play the piano, they advance their quest by 1 when they play it, by 3 when they play it with/for someone else, and 5 when they play the piano and other characters join the celebration. At 15, they complete their quest.

@PastryPerson: See, if I use different animals the reference is completely lost, because the animals of that manga series only make sense in the context of the manga. Thorough the entire manga the characters (and the readers) are left confused at the animals that appear because, while it's a vaguely zodiac theme, it doesn't match neither the Chinese zodiac nor the Western zodiac. The answer as for why these specific animals come up is a minor revelation at the end of the manga, but one that only makes sense in the context of the manga.

Anyways, I think I'll add some vegetal motifs too. I didn't explain it, but these motifs are only for the names of things, mostly. I'm thinking monks could have skills like

• Ever Blooming Lotus - Through your physical training, you have honed your body and cultivated your health. Choose an age. You look that age while you keep your training.
• Plum Tree Bears Sweet Fruit - A strong body is useless without a trained mind. Choose an art (painting, poetry, pottery, etc.). You excel at that art.
• Mouse Sneaks Past (Animal) - You're nimble and light on your feet. You make no noises unless you choose to.
