I am returning to this forum after what feels like forever to sketch dump. Probably I will be around more often again. On to the arts.

Random drowning guy.

Now that's out of the way on to characters that actually have something to do with that comic I am working on.

Then I lost my tablet pen and it all went to sketchiness...

@Fulgrate - Nice cartooning style. I find it hard sometimes to get a good appeal in my simpler style I'm using for a side project. Yours have got it, though. I'm fond of that super round iris-pupil type.

[up][up] Your drawings are all quite well colored, however I don't really like the style in witch you draw. Just personal distaste I suppose.

Constructive Criticism: By the way, you seriously need to figure out how to draw women. The eyebrows are way, WAY to thick, the coloring makes them look like they have 12:00 shadow, and your noses... they're so man-ish. These features are all fine if you're drawing a guy, but if you include them on a woman, I get the severe feeling that the person being drawn is transgender. Not that there's anything wrong with that. If Oda approves of the gays and transgenders, I do.

Hmm... I have to say I agree with [up], Fedora Pirate. Almost all of your noses are the same shape, and it is a kind of masculine shape. I had difficulty telling which of the 4 characters in the first one was supposed to be the girl, and the lady with the braid is very masculine as well. The shape of the face is the biggest thing apart from the nose, I think.

Varying the shape of your noses would probably be a good idea for both male and female characters.

Hm, I actually hear those a lot. I suppose it comes from hanging out with mostly queer people. I see a lot of butch sorts and I didn't mind capturing that for a lot of my female characters since they are erm, sort of a terrorist group... probably not spending too much time plucking their eyebrows. Though, I suppose I do need to work on exaggerating the differences in the noses. The woman with a braid has a short thick nose compared to most of the others but if that's not coming through I need to push it more.

Even still, most women naturally have more gentle figures then guys. You should really try to work on drawing women. Yu cahn du eet!

On a side note, I don't think I've ever even drawn a woman in all my years of drawing. I suppose I should listen to my own advice then, eh? Heheh.

Fallen Legend: Whoa, thanks! I appreciate the fan art. The character she's based off of had the most fan art back when I was working on the comic. Nice gif animation on your latest work.

Fedora Pirate: Thanks for the praise. Your art is exceptional by the way, in both style, line art, and coloring technique. I don't know why others are complaining about the lady. She is done well and her design has a lot of personality. She is also realistic and not a mass produced, well-chiseled design you usually see everywhere. Not that it's bad but when all the characters look the same, it takes away from it. I like stories where everybody looks different and the range in appearances is great enough that no two characters look alike.

The LANCER, his guns, and the movie's tykoon bad guy{Who serves the Dragon villain by helping him financially and providing useful items}. The tykoon's own mooks are diligant, hard-working individuals who have no individuality. They use to be something else, wether it be pig, bug, elephant, or whatever. They took the pill with the money sign on it, and where transformed into slack wearing, tie tying, straight shirted, mindless minions who follow orders without question. Their weapon of choice is a giant ball point pen that shoots lasers. There are a few that use clipboard shields and there's the even rarer "mortar" types that use staplers as grenade launchers. There are other types, and you can be sure they use some kind of oversized office supply for a weapon. As feeble as they may be when compared to a knight or dragon, they pose a great threat in large numbers. The tykoon himself is an exceptional fighter, trained in the art of using his money cane as a weapon. He's able to go toe to toe with a sword wielder if he so feels like fighting.

The Lancer, guns, mooks, and more.

The different shells have different properties. The half shell on the right is the strongest bullet the Lancer has. It's so powerful, a single gun can't contain it, so its split in two so that each of his guns can hold one. In order to fire it, he has to put the guns together. His gun might have another mode that charges up the shell itself in order to increase some aspect of it.

EDIT: The big guy of the group, not initially.

An Ogre.

@Fedora: Most of the noses you draw have a really strong convex shape to the bridge. You might want to try drawing more noses with straight bridges, or concave bridges, or snub noses.

And women just naturally tend towards finer, more rounded faces; whether their personality is butch or feminine and how much time they spend on beauty regimes doesn't have a lot to do with it.

Gunslinger Bolton Dual's shell types.

I got an explody shell, a pew pew shell, a bouncy shell, and hey, I even got a "oh crap, what the frag is that" shell.

I wonder if he's able to mix bullets at the cost of reducing their ammo in order to have different shots available at the same time since his gun can only hold so much ammo.

For example, 30 Barrage shells, 2 Azure Shells, and 7.5 BNB shells in the left gun, and 3 Azure Shells/10 BNB in the right.

New stuff.

Knight's blade and stance. His ready stance really translated well into this version. He maybe bad at somethings, but sword arts is definitely not on the list. His blade has the handle of a great sword, but the length of a hand and a half, and the blade is wide and non-tapering, making it good for defense.

Fighting Dragon, movie version, you can see the simpler, comic design in the middle left.

Knight's techniques. He attacks with linear, high speed attacks. The strength of his fighting style is the immense burst of power and speed, but the flaw is controlling such surges of power, making attacks easy to dodge if telegraphed. Both his top speed and acceleration are high however. If he uses his mobility techniques, he might be able to confuse his opponents enough to land a hit.

Princess's techniques and Royal Magnifying Glass. The energy blast she emits from the magnifier disperses the further it travels. With Psi, that power can stay compact and travel in the form of a beam or other similar attack.

The Princess must use psi in order to manipulate the energy into lasers, beams, and arrays. By default, the magnifier alone just lets loose an energy blast like in the image before this. The insignia that appears around the magnifier is a side effect when using psi power.

I seem to be losing track of the critiques. I know that someone said the eyebrows are "too thick" but if you do not pluck your eyebrows then yeah, they will be thick. Someone also mentioned their figures, I think this image was the only one to show their full figure (aside from this one ) where are they too masculine? She seems plenty curvy enough?

On to faces shapes which I do need practice on. Which is why I spent yesterday drawing women's faces/noses:

Full Practice Sheet 01 Full Practice Sheet 02

Then I took a few and lined them up with my reference to see where I tend to fall out of line (other than the eyes which are consistently larger than "realism").

01 Focused on the nose. 02 Whole head. 03 Some of my first misaligns here, though, oddly, I seem to be making the chin too small in both. And that's actually my most consistant mistake. 04 Major problem here I made her face too round and her nose less concave. 05 Pretty close here except the chin/neck being too small again. 06 Lala. 07 I like the slop of her face. 08 Forehead too tiny here. 09 Neck is too skinny and a bit lopsided. 10 Again with the tiny chin.

I wonder if maybe, counterintuitively, I should make their chins larger? By making them small maybe I am making the nose appear too large?

@Fulgrate - Thanks, though there's always room to improve and tweak things as well as it gives me something to do. : ) I am still loving your designs btw, that guy with the dollar signs on his hat is great. One thing I'd offer is for you to work the line quality (I say while I submit only sketches) right now it seems the same sort of basic width around without any pattern to the variation. edit: Are you on tumblr by any chance? I need people to follow.

edit again: A friend just suggested using fewer lines on the women's noses since the shape seems to lin up about right. I will try this tomorrow.

Regarding eyebrows - no, you don't have to pluck or wax them to make them thin. A lot of women have naturally thinner and more delicate eyebrows than men. I mean, I never do anything with my eyebrows and they definitely aren't as thick as the ones on your characters.

OK, looking at this, I think I can sort of see some of the reasons they look masculine. This one - even though you're very close to the lines of the original, if you showed me that sketch on its own I would have probably said it was a man.

You make the chins too angular. In that picture, it's a soft curve, but you've added in firm, definite lines and points. It's true the the basic shape is still the same, but you've emphasised the lines more than what would actually be seen.

Don't make your chins bigger, make them rounder, and stop adding in lines to indicate the planes of the face if you can't actually see them in the reference pic.

I think eyebrows vary a lot between people. My sister does have naturally thinner eyebrows... but my mother doesn't. (I happen to like large eyebrows, on just about everybody, this guy's probably worst offender... but he is a guy so not really a problem )

Hm, yeah, I see what you mean about the angles. I do tend to draw in a rather angular fashion just in general but I should try to soften that out when drawing women. I'll try to keep that in mind when I draw tomorrow.

Unless you mean something different from what I think I'll still draw the "planes of the face". I just like the structure from it. Personal taste.

It's possible that I don't know myself what I'm talking about when I say 'planes of the face'. I think what I meant was, in the picture I was looking at in that post, you've drawn a line in for the cheekbone, and running down from the ear to show the jaw, while those prominences are not really visible in the reference.

That's possibly also the reason your noses look big even when they're not, size-wise. You always draw in the whole bridge and the side-bits (don't know what they're called) with dark, strong lines. It might look a bit more in proportion if some of those lines were only very subtle or even left out. For example, leave out the bridge if you're doing a front-on picture.
