I'd frankly be really disappointed with that, actually. Unless that one is Shanks and he's actually the weakest among them or something.

Or Blackbeard, I guess, but it's still hard to think of him as being on their level. A consequence of Oda still not showing him to be on that level.

But the thought of someone like Weevil being able to beat any of them irks me incredibly.

I guess it'd help if we actually got to see his strength on-panel.

All I said was that Weevil was physically strong - he could get wiped out by Big Mom's Soul Soul Fruit, for instance (and I don't think he has a devil fruit, nor do I think he has anywhere near Whitebeard Sr.'s skill, experience, bravery, intelligence, etc. etc.).

I'm just saying that as a collective he should be considered an asset along with Kuma and Mihawk.... though I'm not sure if Weevil even has Haki, I can't remember.

He's obviously strong, no one said anything to the contrary.

I don't think mere physical strength could make anyone a match for an Emperor.

I was wondering how we should edit the Elders profile since it's confirmed they are World Nobles, just ones actually trying to run the world instead of just being despots.

I wonder if Mjosgard will have to face any consequences for assaulting Charloss. It's not even like he did it in self defense; he just straight-up bludgeoned Charloss for doing what nobles do. There have to be some laws that dictate what nobles can and can't do to each other, right?

I think he can get away with it, since it's a dispute between so-called "deities".

Yeah look at Zeus. He got away with tons of shit because he was stronger than others. And even he knew not to mess with greater deities like Nyx.

That was literally the Ancient Greek moral system - everyone had to obey the law, unless you were rich and powerful enough to get away with breaking it, and then you could do anything, and everyone else just had to accept it.

Keep in mind, for a not insignificant portion of human history it was believed that one's social status was decided by the god/s, and therefore could never be questioned.

In this case, keeping with my current belief that the Celestial Dragons are considered In-Universe to be Jerkass Gods, they don't rule by divine right, they are divine right.

It's still weird to see Lucci buying into the Kool-Aid that much.

Maybe the rest were thrown under the bus?

Or just some really good Kool-Aid.

The idea of "drinking the Kool-Aid too much" confuses me, since it derives from mass drinking of suicide Kool-Aid. Any Kool-Aid is too much Kool-Aid, since drinking it kills you. I know it's used to describe someone buying into an ideology, but I don't like it being used like that. It feels like too minor of a usage, considering the severity of the thing that it's referencing.

"Drinking the Kool-Aid" should be specifically used for buying into an ideology so much that it literally kills you.

[up] If it helps, the "kool-aid" that inspired the expression was actually Flavorade.

Random thought on Kaido: maybe nobody else gave him that scar on his abdomen and it's a sort of Third Raikage situation.

Lucci always was this fanatical about the WG. It just looks a lot weirder now given the context that one of his gods is Charloss.

That said, I doubt Lucci believes that the nobles literally, physically created the world. He's more likely referring to the state of the world. I trust that he understands there was a period of time before the Void Century and the origin of the celestial dragons; he's familiar with Robin's past, so he should know at least that much.

Let's also not forget that his primary, stated goal is to sate his own personal bloodlust.

Editing to add: A poster on another board I follow OP stuff on posted what I think is a really neat theory. I don't know how likely it is, but I can only think of one hole off the bat that would debunk it and, regardless, it creates an interesting scenario.

To give credit where it's due, the original post is here http://forums.arlongpark.net/showthread.php?t=49702&p=3903096&viewfull=1#post3903096

After rereading the chapter several times, a few things come to mind:

1.) We know that the throne is extremely important, and the story about no one ever having sat on it is almost definitely a lie.
2.) We know from the Ohara incident that the Celestial Dragons' greatest desire is to promote the founding legend and keep their ancestors' true actions a secret.
3.) The name of the great kingdom they destroyed is so important that it must never be uttered.

Considering these facts and the general themes of the series, I think I get the gist of the story.

Prior to nine hundred years ago there was a great kingdom named Mary Geoise. It's likely that no country had ever been able to mount a successful attack on Mary Geoise due to its incredible natural defenses, so the "war" we've been told about didn't happen. Twenty pirates snuck into the capital and murdered the king, claiming the throne for themselves. Under cover of darkness their crews were carefully smuggled into the city and went on a rampage, indiscriminately killing as many of the rightful inhabitants of the city as they could find.

After a heated debate about who should rule, the twenty captains decided to use their newfound stronghold as a base from which to raid the nations of the world, declaring that no king would ever rule over them again. However, the pirates all agreed that their home islands were perpetually off-limits. Over time, representatives from the nations victimized by pirates came to Mary Geoise to offer tribute money in exchange for protection against the relentless pirate raids, possibly unaware that the two were directly related. This quickly became more lucrative than the raids had been, and many pirates were given positions in a newly established hierarchy of protection squads known as the Marines.

As more time passed, new (unrelated) pirates emerged and aging Marines passed on their brutal thug-like ways to a generation of young recruits softened by propaganda and the knowledge that the Marines had kept their homelands safe from the horrors of piracy.

If any part of this story ever reached the public, the Celestial Dragons' divinity and the Marines' moral fortitude would quickly be exposed as a complete farce.

TL;DR: The name of the ancient kingdom whose name must never be known was Marijoa. It was sacked, taken over, and the ones who did it is it as a base of operations until their victims started paying tribute.

Basically the World Government grew out of a huge protection racket formed by the leaders of the raiders.

That one hole I could come up with is the idea that a war never actually happened, as that contradicts what the Oharans found. Though that may just mean the conflict was more heated than the their allows for.
