Fuck just air them. They were pretty much just burning through them as it is, there's no point in not just airing the rest really quickly like it seemed their plan was anyway.

Well believe it, bucko! Networks ARE SEXIST! I wish I was exaggerating and just going on my usual bad-mood ranting like I do here... but I am not.

Networks, technically, are not sexist. They are careful, conservative, and paranoid. All the direct data they have shows that boys don't buy girl toys. The problem is, the last time anyone really tested that was a few decades ago, and no one is willing to rock the boat enough to see if that's still true. You would think MLP's massive male fandom would be enough proof, but it's actually the opposite. No one really knows what makes a show a success or not. Beautiful, intelligent shows flop all the time, while shows that are like a massive checklist of what not to do still manage to succeed.

Short version: New things are always a risk. Networks hate risks. So they bury it, causing it to fail, and the next network has more evidence that new things are a risk.

So when they try to sell toys, for the love of God, don't make a half-hour TV show about them!! Just make some short, or a 1-minute web series or something that isn't as expensive, to market the toys!

I find it hard to believe that all network executives are merchandiser rely solely on stereotypical gender roles when it comes to their programming and product.

Has there been in studies or anything to confirm that, because while understandable in the 50s or 60s is seems strange that a view like that would persist, if only for pragmatic reasons.

I don't know how one would conduct a study on network executive practices, so, no. ;)

Oh wait, you probably meant gender role stuff. I think the execs mostly rely on "common knowledge" for their decisions, but I think the results they get from focus tests are kind of depressing, too. (See: Giancarlo Volpe's depressing comic about the Green Lantern focus tests)

I'm not sure whether similar results exist for toys (or how much that even means when marketing basically makes taste nowadays). What we do know is that the marketing people are destroying good shows over it — just look at the way Cartoon Network treated the DCAU.

I'd like the Hub to buy the Avatar franchise, or Netflix.

They should do 2 things:

  • 1.) Get rid of the Neilson rating system. It is outdated and doesn't give them the whole scope of who watched the shows!

  • 2.) Use online services more. They're already doing this with Korra Season 3 come August, but they need to find some way to profit off it.

I definitely think Netflix or Hulu should buy the series. Either them or Cartoon Network but I feel like Netflix or Hulu is more likely. Some people I saw on other sites have been suggesting Disney but I'm 100% sure that if Disney bought it it would be way watered down.

My question is, what else does Nick have to show in LOK's place? The only real mainstays they have is Spongebob and Fairly Odd Parents, every other show lasts for like 1 season.

I asked that because I'm curious if they have a reason for doing this. Like for example I remember in 2011 NBC pushed back episodes of Parks And Recreation in order to show the colossal bomb that was Outsourced. So if whatever they have planned bombs, then LOK will probably end on TV again for book 4.

From a page back, yeah Nickelodeon was banking on Avatar to be their Harry Potter, but things didn't pan out that way with the movie flopping and the toy merch not doing so hot.

For this series, I don't think Korra herself is the issue insofar as selling toys, it's just that the majority of the fanbase is out of their demo and don't watch any other show on Nick nor would be interested in the products advertised during the commercials (CIRCUS AFRO CIRCUS AFRO). I mean when they have the Turtles killing it in the merch area, it probably gets harder and harder for whichever exec is championing Korra to justify giving it a prime slot.

Would Netflix have any interest in doing something with the franchise? I wouldn't want someone to buy it and then just sit on it forever.

Well I think the story is supposed to wrap up after season 4. So really Netflix would just be buying the series to air the already made episodes (IIRC production has already started on season 4).

I'd want them to make a new series after Korra at some point in the future. Netflix probably doesn't have the means to do that so it's kind of a double edged sword in that regard. At least we'd get access to it although we might not get DVD releases. Does Netflix do that with its original shows?

[up]x4 I think the execs are the issue for not even trying the merchandise. There are plenty of things to market to teenagers! Shirts, bags, keychains, posters (I mean, I feel terrible that I was at a con in January where Miss Varney was and I didn't have anything for her to sign).

Hell, I know of a few places that are getting in on official cosplay by A) Having detailed art pictures that break down a characters costumes and B) Selling the parts of the costume that would be a bit harder to make as official merch. And, by harder to make, I mean stuff like Asami's Electro-Gauntlet.

Or, in terms of figures, do the higher quality ones that collector's would be more inclined to have on shelves. I would kill for a Korra Figure to sit next to my Alice and Assassin's Creed Figures.

There are tons of options. And Nick just simply isn't smart or creative enough to harness them. Cartoon Network has the same issue.

And games! Not just half-assed video games on the website, I mean REAL games like the one they're making now, and tabletop games too! I know plenty of people that would love to play Avatar/Korra Hero Clix, for instance.

On another note, away from the controversy over whether we'll have to turn on the TV to watch Korra (which I am mad about), I have a few questions: We have the Terra, Red Monsoon, Agni Kai, and Triple Threat Triads. Anyone have a cooler name than "Iron Men" for a non-bending gang that uses guns, other tech, and Equalist methods to try to control the streets? And with a possible divide between the new Air Nomads and Airbenders, could an airbending gang or airbending pro-benders be possible, as an attempt by non-Nomad airbenders to find some other identity with their abilities?

The last episode of the book got leaked. Bumi dies, Mako is replaced by an impostor, Tahno and Toza cameo, Jinora goes rogue, Noatak returns as an ally, and the Red Lotus are revealed to be working for a shady Water Tribe guy called Salik that will be the villain of Book 4.
