Overrated/Underrated Manga and anime

OVERRATED: Teppen. Toppa. Gurren. Lagaan.

UNDERRATED: Yotsuba

OVERRATED: Azumanga Daioh, Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, Neon Genesis Evangelion, K-On! (although all justified)

Really, I choose not to care how popular a series is. If its good to me then honestly I don't give a damn.

UNDERRATED: Madlax

Full. Fricking. Stop.

Underrated: Berserk, it is moderately popular, but most people wont even give it a chance, but if you compare it to one of the big three in terms of story, characters, art and action it's better to a huge degree.

Overrated: K On, i watched as much as i could, i loved the Detroit Metal City shout out in the first episode, and the art and animation was top-notch... but then i-Zzzzzz Zzzzz ZZZ Zzzzzz.

Yeah, kinda boring, i didn't see it having much else aside from looking nice going for it.

A few months on this forum has made me think that Dragon Ball Z is underrated.

I'm surprised there aren't more Hellsing fans.

I wouldn't have guessed Neon Genesis Evangelion to suffer from Hype Backlash, I thought people here were pretty reasonable... then I went to another forum and suddenly NGE elitist douchebags >___>. I'm spoiled by this forum.

I think Liar Game, Onani Master Kurosawa, and Oyasumi Punpun are underrated. I generally disliked most of those "BADASS BLOODY SEINEN" that people recommended me (Black Lagoon, Hellsing, etc.)

And shojo NEVER gets enough love. :(

Underrated: FLCL, Rocket Girls, B Gata H Kei.

Overrated: Excel Saga, TTGL.

Overrated: FLCL, Gurren Lagann, Suzumiya Haruhi, Angel Beats!, Highschool Of The Dead, Shakugan No Shana, K-ON!.

Underrated: Minami-ke, Bamboo Blade, Taishou Yakyuu Musume, B Gata H Kei, Kimi Ni Todoke, Midori Days.

As for K-ON!, it is admittedly overrated, but it's not as bad as the haters make it out to be.

Overrated: Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei , MAYBE Suzumiya Haruhi , Umineko No Naku Koro Ni. Underrated: D Gray Man, Yu Yu Hakusho, Welcome To The NHK.

I'd say Mushishi and Saiyuki are fairly underrated, but I could just be looking in the wrong places. Overrated... I never really got into Tsubasa, xxxHoLic or Katekyo Hitman Reborn.

Overated : NGE, Yu-gi-oh, DBZ, naruto, naruto shippuden, bleach, digimon tamers

Underated: Ninku, 2003 astro boy, digimon savers, Bastard!!.

Nah I kinda agree with harrko, listing choices without elaboration is just kinda pointless.

Anyway I don't know any anime I'd call "OVERRATED"

But several UNDERRATED ones.

Dragon Ball Z. Like Lord of the Rings, seems victim to the demands of instant gratification. Also seems to get criticized a lot for things that either aren't actually in the show, or else are exclusive to the movies and filler episodes.

Galaxy Express 999 in the US. Its not on DVD and most people haven't heard of it (in Japan its considered a classic though).

Iria: Zeiram the Animation though by "Underrated" I mean "more people haven't heard of it."

I'm not sure if this counts, but Kodomo no Jikan. Actually, I use this manga as a yardstick for our culture: I'll believe that we're not living in a politically correct nanny-state run by old fogies with Peter Pan syndrome the day this gets licensed and published. without controversy.

One I wanted to add, Dirty Pair Flash. Okay, the show itself is kind of typical (if charming) sci-fi, but the second series has the best OP of any anime ever. And yeah forget what I said about it being "typical," the show itself was pretty awesome.

Overrated:

• The vast majority of romance anime. Not only they have they virtually interchangeable plots, they all use the same character stereotypes and even the plot of the majority of the episodes is identical. It is beyond me how the same nerds who snark at romantics comedies can actual like these animes at the same time, when their writing is even worse.

• Death Note. It is an interesting story and I'd say, a pretty unique premise for a detective story, but nearly as deep as people say it is.

• sadly, One Piece. I really love this series, but people tend to present it as way better than it actually is.

Overrated: One Piece, Naruto, Bleach, Death Note, Code Geass, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Fullmetal Alchemist, Gurren Lagann, Suzumiya Haruhi, FLCL, and damn near all Mobile Suit Gundam series.

• Please know that I LIKE quite a bit of those anime, but even so, they're quite overrated at times.

Underrated: El Hazard, Yu Yu Hakusho, Sailor Moon, Shaman King, Zatch Bell, Dragon Ball Z Kai, and Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood.

^ To me it is. The original anime wasn't all bad and did some stuff better, but Brotherhood being closer to the manga (which was already better than the anime) makes it an improvement.

But alot of people still seem to prefer the original anime, which is why I call it "overrated" and Brotherhood "underrated."
