Dali, Van Gogh, Whistler, Bacon, Magritte, and a few who I don't think have been mentioned so far: Thomas Cole, Canaletto and Frida Kahlo.

Kazuma Kaneko is one of my favorites. I love the smooth quality of his work. I've also got a soft spot for Salvador Dali, mostly because of the huge amount of secondary details in his work, and of course, the fact that it's a real mind trip. ^^

On a less famous note, Rebecca Dart is awesome. I particularly like her pencil sketches. And Lucy Knisley, too.

Ryoma Ito because his artworks are simple and not really your typical Anime style.

I'm a huge fan of (nsfw) Takashi Murakami along with most Futurist and surrealist work. I also really love some of Roy Lichtenstein's work, and ceramically speaking, I absolutely adore Jun Kaneko.

I like medievalism, pimped out dresses, and pretty things so— the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood! Although I feel kinda guilty about this because I'm supposed to be this heartless consummate rational who abhors romanticism. Whatevs.

Too many to name, but Katsuhiro Otomo, Noriyoshi Ohrai, Vincent Van Gogh, Gustav Klimt, and Alphonse Mucha are pretty high on the list.

^^Ooh, Escher too.

I would be leaning more towards Akira Toryama and Masashi Kishimoto. When i draw, i take the simplicity used in Dr. Slump and Dragonball from Akira (With DBZs great fight scenes of course) and the Extreme detail used in Kishimotos backgrounds by his detailing background artist.

Salvatore DalĂ, Vincent Van Gogh, Drew Struzan, Hayao Miyazaki and whoever are all those people drawing and designing all those absolutely stunning backgrounds in all of the Studio Ghibli movies that wasn't Hayao Miyazaki.

I'm gonna have to agree with the OP on Monkey Punch, although I prefer his later, more refined, cartoony style, as opposed to the MAD Magazine-inspired stuff in the original post. Although both are great.

And on the other side of the Earth, I've really gotten into Steve Ditko's film noir, quirky style. (Ignore the dialogue in that second Ditko example, just focus on the art.)
