I foresee a series that will have its own merits.

This series is, of course, a cynical mockery of everything Haruhi and if you're a fan of that then you should be insulted that this exists.

That said, it's perfectly possible for it to be good by its own measure. I'm not too interested though.

It is a cynical cashgrab made for those who wanted a cute moe Yuki Nagato and and awkward shy girl love story. To which I reply. OW! MY DIABETES! And then I love it anyway.

Psh Haruhi was the cynical one, this one is the traditional anime show.

No? Haruhi is goofy, funny and heartwarming. This is just a cash grab aimed at Yuki fans.

That's not true!

It's also aimed at Asakura fans.

Not fans of the actual characters from Haruhi, mind you. Fans of their appearance only.

God, the level of salt in here is unreal. Should we just make a separate thread for the anime, if you guys are going to keep jumping down the throats of anyone who mentions it?

It's been fun.

Given that the non-spinoff side of the series has been dead in the water for years now, I can't imagine anyone using this thread to talk about anything but the new anime. People would just follow you to the new thread anyway.

Salt is forever.

[up][up]Amen to that. Seems these days, we can't even express a wish to see something without someone telling me how I ought to feel evil grin That's alright, though: I make my own decisions, and I am going to enjoy this anime.

Why would you follow us to a new thread if the only thing you have to say in regards to a manga you haven't read is that it's a cynical cash grab that butchers the characters? If people want to discuss the new anime and manga, either let us have a place to do it or stop complaining when we do it here.

It's been fun.

Because I have a right to participate in discussions? And you don't have a right to a negativity-free thread. If people have feelings on the matter then they're allowed to express them. If they keep expressing them repeatedly several episodes into the anime (while not watching it) then maybe they're trolls, but at this point reactions to the premise of the anime is pretty much what you'd expect from a thread about it.

Edit: Oh wait, are you trying to say this should be a manga-only thread? You'd have to get the mods to change the title if you wanna do that.

Yes, of course. You start dissing Medaka Box in its own thread and I will throw walls of text at you explaining why it's actually the greatest thing since sliced bread. That's what discussion is.

RedSavant Since: Jan, 2001

@Clarste: Yes, of course, but so far most of the people who have chimed in on the Yuki-chan anime are being very vocal about how they haven't even read the manga it's based off of. There's exactly 15 seconds of teaser animation, a setting synopsis, and a manga out, and if you don't like the sound of the second and refuse to read the third, what is there to discuss?

At some point it's better for everyone if the people who aren't interested in (or actively hating on) the spinoff to stop getting involved in discussions on it.

Complaining too much about this is probably as pointless and missing the point as complaining about the Haruhi-chan shorts, however, and if this succeeds it might restart enough interest for an actual third season, so hey!

Again, my opinion is this is ultimately nothing but fluff, but as long as it remains true to the manga, it should be nice, feel-good fluff, which is a real rarity in this day and age. I still hate a few details, like Kyon's translation from his main canon self, so it's a very improvable series even on the basis of a Slice of Life series' merits, however.

The manga is quite interesting to read. Perhaps the joy is that the characters and story are familiar enough, but seeing everyone settle into an ordinary world is very welcoming.

For the record, I've read some of the manga, but not all of it. Not because I dislike it, but because of a combo of too little free time and it not being licensed here.

[up][up][up][up]We can chime in with our initial thoughts on the premise and then... do nothing? It's not like we're spamming the thread. You are then left with the option to either complain about people not liking things you like or to try to convince us that this is better than it sounds. You could also ignore us. Or maybe it's not really any better than it sounds? I wouldn't know, all I know is that it sounds kind of uninteresting and its airing in a few weeks.

I don't know about you, but I freaking love talking about stuff that I love, so I would welcome new blood joining the thread... You seem to want to create an echo chamber though, which sounds boring.

I kind of just figured that this Kyon is what Kyon would have been like in the Haruhi Disappearance timeline had he not been transposed in from the ordinary timeline. Yuki did tweak a few people other than herself, like Asakura and Koizumi (or that's what they would have been like without Haruhi's influence, whatever).

Anyway, cutest fluffiest cashgrab ever, I'm in. :P

Fair, but saying that the character interaction is charming and that it's a nice slice-of-life series isn't likely to do much to convince people who don't accept these characters as the ones from the original series and who think it looks mediocre as a slice-of-life.

I'm not saying it's a wonderful series full of all the magic that gives the author his writing power; I'm saying that starting off discussion of the anime with 'holy shit this looks terrible, what a soulless, cynical cash grab' isn't going to win any new people over either.

It's been fun.

I would like to take a moment to note that I read the Yuki-chan manga up to a point and I didn't like it. The complaints people are making are basically entirely valid: It's not Haruhi and if you go into it because you're a Haruhi fan, you're going to be disappointed. If you just want a cute shy girl sitting around being cute then have fun with it. I personally don't see the appeal of it.

Oh, but I guess I can't criticize it too much. It was all pretty forgettable, so there's not a lot of things left in my memory to complain about.

[up][up]But they're not the ones from the original series. Wasn't that the point? I thought it was an alternate universe based on the one from the movie.

I assume it makes some sort of effort to endear you to them on their own terms.

In my opinion, yes. I spent a long time working on the series as one of the only translators publishing it online, so I fully admit I'm biased; but I enjoyed the series for what it is.

Look, I don't want to snap at anyone or drive anyone off from the thread. I really don't, and I'm sorry for having gotten sharp. What you see is what you get; I'm not going to change your mind on that, because the only connection there is to the main universe is questionable and comes rather deep into the manga's run. I just don't get the appeal of approaching a spinoff, or anything really, from the very start with negativity. No, it's not season 3, but it's not trying to be. It's just a cute slice-of-life show.

It's been fun.
