De nada. Ooh, another thing that should be worth posting is the play-by-play of a fight between Octavian and Ahlat. From twitter, and then from some other dude who copied it to the forum. The fancy move names are evidently unique Charms, because 3E spirits don't rely on template Charms any more.

John Mørke @hatewheel · 2h

Ahlat vs. Octavian. Place your bets.

We have decided that Arianna has sent the Quarter Prince to destroy one of Ahlat's temples. But Ahlat confronts him there.

"Should Octavian try to intimidate Ahlat to start?" "No, Ahlat just appears and bull rushes him." "Lulz."

John Mørke @hatewheel · 33m

Octavian tells Ahlat his horns will make a nice decoration for his throne. Ahlat resists the threat; as goes Ahlat, so goes Harborhead.

Octavian uses Principle of Motion but Ahlat sacrifices his momentum to parry the attack. Now Ahlat summons the power of the hecatomb...

Ahlat unleashes an attack with 34 damage successes to destroy Octavian in one hit; Octavian soaks with The Tower Still Stands.

Subsequently, Octavian absorbs a massive amount of force from the attack and adds it to his own momentum. Advantage Octavian.

Octavian turns Ahlat's attack against him with a massive shockwave; Ahlat strikes it aside with his spear, obliterates a statue.

Ahlat lashes out with Horned God's Prowess. Octavian's Invincible Iron Bastion cuts the fury of Ahlat's assault.

The speartip sparks from Octavian's chest. The Living Tower is driven back a step. Octavian is bleeding.

John Mørke @hatewheel · 1m

Octavian lashes at Ahlat with Equitable Remedy, channeling his infernal power to cripple the Southern God of War and Cattle.

With Aegis of Invincible Authority and Whirling Dervish Defense, Ahlat blocks the tower staff. Tiles shatter beneath his feet.

Ahlat snorts with exertion, red eyes rolling, and lashes at the legs of the Living Tower, hoping to cut him down.

Octavian's momentum bleeds away as Ahlat puts him on the defensive. He answers back with Falling Tower Rain.

Octavian whirls his staff and brings it down, but the Bull God braces spear with horn to catch the shattering strike.

Ahlat lunges and pushes the Living Tower back and brings his spear down overhead, driving the Quarter Prince to his knees.

The tide turns as Ahlat builds momentum. Ahlat lowers his head and charges the downed demon, goring him into a granite wall.

Ahlat stands over the fallen prince and flares his nostrils, drinking in the souls of warrior dead. Ahlat's Essence surges.

Ahlat's power to draw upon the hecatomb is renewed. He channels the armies of southern dead through the head of his spear.

The Bull God's spear grows crimson and roars with the battle-shout of legions. Octavian is impaled through the chest.

Harborhead shakes. Ahlat's idols fall, but his temple stands. The crimson banner of victory washes over the Quarter Prince.

Where the Living Tower once stood there is a blasted black outline. Ahlat falls, braced on his spear, his Essence expended.

His priests send a call across the land to gather cattle for the sacrifice.

John Mørke @hatewheel · 1m

Kinda surprised. Octavian had Ahlat beat on paper, but Ahlat's bleed effect caused him to miss his ultimate attack at a critical moment.

Forum post here if you wanna look at the discussion.

I think "Erymanthus Inc" works better than "Blood-Apes Inc", because "Erymanthus" has a few more letters in common with "Monsters".

Yeah, but that requires remembering or looking up their fancy Old Realm name.

On the further adventures of, eh, let's call him Boo.

Goddaamn, a lot of the conversation in the thread is inane. Endless bitching between "Octavian building a door-guarding empire is cool" and "No! It means he fails to guard the door!"

All the while missing the blatantly obvious and cool way: it starts with Octavian recruiting the bandits that wonder nearby to guard it (on threat of death), slowly expanding the camp as more people come in. And then centuries down the line, the dark empire.

Binding a big-name elemental to a post for a few centuries is going to land you in A LOT more trouble than finding your preciousness to be secured atop a tower in New Mordor.

True. But I think Elementals would make better Babysitters than Blood Apes.

Maybe. And really, elementals aren't all that more human than demons. I mean, compare the careless employment of puppeteers (to build a hospital) and the water elemental crocodiles (to staff the hospital) in regards to stray babies. In the former they'll just try to cuddle and an overseer can recover the baby much easier, while in the latter the baby gets eaten. So elementals turn out to need more strict management.

You also need to find the right one for the job. If you tell a dumb violent thug to sneak your kid over the country, he's going to have some difficulties, whether he a demon or an elemental.

One the other hand, a couple of Neomah may deliver him in a much better state. (Except his virginity.)
A demon that specialises in sneakery and which you had time to instruct about "how humans work" is going to be ideal. You may even assign those two bloodapes as his subordinates.

Edit: Hah, and I just get to a guy expressing the same sentiment in my thread binge

It really seems like the question is, "Can I set a bunch of alien murder-weirdos to some task with minimal supervision and expect it to go off hitchless?" and the answer is, "No."
Which strikes me as inherently reasonable, really.

[up]This.

Part of being a competent sorcerer is knowing the limitations of anything you summon up. If you whistle up a thug spirit, it should be to do a thug job. If you need a spirit for a not-thug job, put those Occult dots to work and think of one.

But Three, you wanna tell me Kings of the Wood or those water elementals with an intimacy towards watching people suffer are better than the pretty wasp-mounts or the alcoholic healer bugs, you go right ahead and try. I promise not to roll my eyes too much. tongue

Well, there are no doubt *some* elementals who would make better babysitters than blood apes.

There are also plenty of elementals whose chief moral objection to eating children is that they're too small.

There are no spirit-template charms, but I think we're getting a spirit-charm template.

Probably for the best, right now, since we've got a Malefactor with Demon-Summoning against us. Nothing's more embarrassing than having your minions hijacked mid-fight.

>Nothing's more embarrassing than having your minions hijacked mid-fight.

That's not how it works. Slave-Spawn Summons only says that it can steal the demons bind by another Infernal's Slave-Spawn Summons. General Summon First Circle's clause of not being summonable by others is not even contested.

And even if your ST houserules it off, the opponent having wasted an action, a wp and 20+ motes is generally more valuable than a first circle demon.

I think this is the root of the misconception. Demons aren't magically compelled to obey orders or fulfill a task. They are magically compelled to want to obey your orders or fulfill a task. This is a critical distinction!

I like this explanation.

I'm more talking about the Malfactor charms that lets you easily, passively influence demons, hinder their attempts to attack you, command them, and easily beat them.

(And I'll have to check the text again, because I am reasonably certain it will allow you steal a demon summoned by normal sorcery. There's a lot of "As Standard Summoning, except.")

Sorcerous binding is as strong as the Motivation, rendering attempts to stop it unacceptable orders.

Unnatural mental influence forces you to spend willpower to resist if it's against your motivation-it doesn't automatically fail.

okay so you guys know about the sun right?

it’s this big ball of fire and explosions that flies around giving people cancer
but did you know there used to be TEN SUNS?
yeah
it SUCKED
it sucked so bad that Di Jun (aka Chinese Zeus)
(aka the father of all these rambunctious suns)
(get it? suns? sons? it’s brilliant)
had no idea what to do
so here’s what went down:

So there’s this really great archer named Hou Yi
and he’s chilling in his heavenly crib with his wife Chang’e
and all of a sudden the phone rings and it’s Di Jun
Hou Yi is like yo Di Jun my man what’s cookin’?
and Di Jun is like my friend the entire earth is cooking
you could fry an egg on a fucking glacier right about now
and it ain’t none of this sous vide bullshit or nothing
this is honest to goodness summer backyard barbecue
except instead of a big plate of watermelon on the back porch
everyone’s skin is melting off
can you solve this problem for me?
and Hou Yi is like you got it buddy

so Hou Yi grabs his trusty arrows and goes outside
and just kills nine out of the ten suns
and then he stares at the tenth sun real hard and he’s like
you best behave, sun
and the sun is like OK DUDE NO PROBLEM
and promptly dives underground and takes the subway home
and Hou Yi is like well that was easy
you’re welcome Di Jun
and Di Jun is like WHAT THE FUCK MAN YOU JUST KILLED 90% OF MY SUNS
I MEAN SONS
WELL I MEAN TECHNICALLY BOTH
and Hou Yi is like dude do you know who you called to solve your problem?
you called Hou Yi the immortal archer
what the fuck did you think was going to happen?

Why you need to summon the right sorta demon for the right sorta result.

I'm going to be running Contagion of Law as a one shoot for my players, and since I' doing it over roll20 I need something pretty for them to look at it while we RP and stuffs.

Anyone have any art pieces/know any good pieces of landscape that would make a good stand-in for Gethamane?

You could try looking through these threads for some snowy mountains or something. Like this for instance? Or here? Or this for the later part of the adventure? These look nice too.

Well that's what I fished from them.

Third Edition map of Creation.

Wonder what the deal is with those coffee-mug stains around Zoatham and the Gem area.
