Are competent dictatorships better than democracy?

Ehhh, according to the "keys to power" theory, benevolent democracies and cruel dictatorships are stable for the same reason, but a benevolent dictatorship will likely become one or the other or just collapse. Short term though, if you've got a strong constitution and mechanisms to ensure your dictator will be good for you, it does help to consolidate the power. There was nothing unusual about Julius Caesar being made Dictator of the Roman Republic, it's just that it he was the first to say "actually, this isn't a temporary position anymore".

I remember my Roman History teacher talking about how Augustus changed the Roman peoples' minds. After Caesar was assassinated, everybody thought it was a good thing. Then shortly thereafter, Augustus gave a speech that was apparently awesome it moved everybody to tears.

That was Mark Antony, actually. Guy incited a riot and tried to rule Rome.

Unfortunately, Augustus, called Octavian at the time, also wanted to rule Rome.

After a short period of peace due to Antony being married to his sister, Antony decided that since Cleopatra was hotter in his opinion, he should go with her.

Octavian used this as an excuse to attack, Antony's entire navy went over to Octavian because he was seen as a better ruler/more competent, and Antony stabbed himself.

Then Cleopatra tried to defend her action, and Octavian shot her retorts down easily.

Then she died too, and Augustus/Octavian ruled.
