Probably something along the lines of "Don't do it." but this guy isn't in uniform, he's not a soldier of any nation.

And lockon read my mind again.

Exactly, hence why Alexei asked the baited question of what nation he belonged to.

Some systems, like yours, lockon, only have one planet with any civilization on it. Others, like Kuroi or Muralla have three or four. The Machisu system has nine.

Whatevs.

Though, only like, a dozen are listed in the Useful notes.

"Yeah, and James also gave no indication he was anywhere near the brig, but whatever."

Yea, my internet kind of happened to have died. I think I mentioned that. And only just got it back up.

I'm still working on the others.

And apparently some time passed since the explosion. James can be anywhere right now, really.

Meanwhile, in the past...

She knew she wasn't dead, because her head hurt too much. Slowly Kennedy's eyes opened and closed. Everything around her was stark white. It felt as if she were lying down, so with some difficulty she sat up. The white room was small and filled with bed-like tables. Or table-like beds. They were, naturally, also white.

"You aren't the most comforting place to wake up," she informed the room at large.

"Mm, yet you did wake up," a soft voice replied from beyond her vision. "I understand the color was chosen is to ease the transition from this world to the next one. Perhaps it's not so pleasant if you aren't making the journey just yet, although in that case you have the consolation of staying put for the moment."

Kennedy turned her head towards the speaker, then tried shuffling her entire body around when that failed to locate him. Obligingly he stepped into view, a middle aged man dressed in a coat, which was white of course.

"Doctor Hua," he inclined his head in introduction. "I've been instructed not to keep you. After the difficulties just getting you aboard, they're anxious to begin the debriefing. Here," he placed a small pill in the palm her hand. "This will help with any discomfort your feeling; again the result of impatience. Relieving your pain while you were unconscious might have allowed for a restful sleep, you see."

Kennedy blinked slowly, eyeing the supposed doctor. She really had no idea what he was talking about. She popped the pill into her mouth, where it immediately dissolved into a minty fizz. The throbbing in her temples began to fade immediately, leaving her comfortably bemused.

"Remarkably you've been granted a few extra minutes to dress," Hua indicated a neatly folded pile of clothing on a nearby chair. "I'll give you some privacy for that, when you're ready the young officer outside the door will show you where to go." He nodded his head again and stepped back out of view.

Hopping off the table-bed, Kennedy picked up the black outfit which had been left for her. A Centauri military uniform. Of course she'd known she must be on the shuttle. Did the Centauri treat all their prisoners like this? It didn't sync up with the few stories told about released POWs, nor why they'd be giving her a uniform. Or talk about a debriefing. Something was definitely wrong here.

Kennedy let out her breath in a slow puff. Whatever the case, she didn't seem to have much choice. She couldn't escape a ship without a frame. She couldn't get a frame without leaving the infirmary. She couldn't leave the infirmary without coming across some officer-guy. There was no help for it but to play along with whatever was happening.

Within a few minutes, she stepped out the door to be greeted by a man in the regular, azure Confederate uniform. He looked perfectly suited for a poster with the words The Enemy plastered over it. Upon seeing Kennedy, he gave a very deep, very formal bow.

"This way, please." He motioned down the corridor.

Briefly Kennedy considered sprinting in the opposite direction, as soon as the officer's back was turned to lead the way. He wasn't armed and she could move quickly if she had to. And go where? She shook the notion from her head and followed along. A few twists and turns later, they stopped at a pair of double doors. The officer again bowed and took a guarding position by the entrance.

Mustering her courage, Kennedy stepped inside to find a long table facing several monitors along the far wall. Standing with their backs turned to her were a man and a woman. The man had a uniform matching the guard's, with added markings to the arms and an impressive hat. The woman, dressed in the same black Kennedy had been given, held a datapad in one hand and grasped a cane in the other.

"It's about time," The woman spoke crisply as she turned- and promptly dropped the datapad to the floor.

The man turned as well and beamed at Kennedy, failing to notice the woman's reaction.

"Agent Bishop, it's a-"

"Captain, be silent!" The woman interjected, quickly stooping and retrieving her datapad. "This is not our agent." She waved the pad at him, pointing to something on it.

Kennedy stepped back defensively. That hadn't lasted long.

"Security!" The woman rapped her cane on the floor and the door opened to reveal the escorting officer.

"Hold on here," The captain held his hand up. "There's no doubt this is the pilot who saved us from that Ace." He peered at Kennedy, then glanced at the datapad. "Perhaps cosmetic surgery? We can have Hua confirm this quickly enough."

"That's not necessary," Kennedy spoke up, standing at attention. "I am Spaceman Kennedy Quinn, third of flight team Crow, sixty-first Space Naval unit of the Earth Federation."

The captain visibly deflated, while the woman looked angrier than ever.

"All wasted!" She shouted at Kennedy. "Two ships lost, half a dozen pilots! Johann himself died protecting us so we could grab the wrong God damned pilot!"

"Enough." Though the captain spoke quietly, his authoritative tone was absolute. "Take her to the brig." He spoke to the guard, who quickly grabbed hold of Kennedy and pulled her from the room.

Kennedy offered no resistance, walking along resignedly as the puzzle pieces in her head fell into place. Harker had been right all along, but it wasn't Mythril the Centauri had been after. She thought back to the battle. The accidental shot which has disabled Yun's frame. And how coldly Carina had spoken when firing on Kennedy. She shivered and nearly lost her footing, the guard's firm grip keeping her upright. Carina had been as close as a sister to her for nearly two years, how was it possible not to have noticed anything was amiss in all that time? Carina's facade had been so convincing even the Centauri had mistaken Kennedy for their agent instead. In a way, this was a victory for the Federation. She'd managed to foil a covert Confederate operation without even realizing it. Kennedy Quinn, spy-smasher! All she had to do was find a way to escape the shuttle and return home as the celebrated hero she'd always dreamt of becoming.

The officer stopped her in front of a heavily reinforced door and clicked a button near it.

"This is Ensign Kahlings," he spoke distinctly into a communication device. "I have a prisoner."

After a moment the door slid open with a low hum, revealing a darkly lit security desk and a row of barred cells.

"Kind of primitive." Kennedy blurted out.

"You'll manage, come on." Kahlings released her and motioned to one of the cells. Off to the side of the desk was another Centauri, hand resting easily on a holstered pistol.

In her imagination, Kennedy grabbed the Ensign in a choke hold and forced the security guard to hand her his gun. An exciting race through the hallways later and she'd stumble upon her Quicksilver, miraculously repaired and ready to launch. Blowing a hole in the side of the ship, it would be a short jaunt to the Partholon... at which point the fantasy was cut off by the slam of very real iron bars locking into place after she entered the cell. Ensign Kahlings looked at her curiously from the other side.

"I'd never have imagined a Fed would turn on their comrades for the sake of honor," he stated simply, nodding his head similarly to the bow he'd made upon their initial meeting.

Kennedy tried to think of a smart quip to throw at him, but the young officer had already turned and left.
