There is now a page action crowner on this subject here.
I tried to include the options mentioned in this thread, but feel free to add other ones or edit the ones I already included to make them clearer. I included a "just rename" option since in the event of a split, coming up with new names could follow the split itself.
"irhgT nm0w tehre might b ea lotof th1nmgs i dont udarstannd, ubt oim ujst goinjg to keepfollowing this pazth i belieove iN !!!!!1 dIs "pets" really an important part or is just important that they be non-human?
Fight smart, not fair.I'd say pets. If it's anything sentient, its just Dead Guy Junior, isn't it? Besides, you pretty much only get to name pets and children.
I was thinking of the example from Robin Hood Men In Tights. He names all toilets after the villain.
Fight smart, not fair.I think something that specific is Too Rare To Trope. It would just fall under "named a pet after a person as an insult." Yeah, its a little bit of a stretch, but Tropes Are Flexible, and the only other trope it fits under is Historical In-Joke (toilets are called johns).
Hence my question of "pets". I don't think pets are necessary. I mean, if a dude names his armor/shield after his mother or something, would you count that?
Fight smart, not fair. That's a better example. And yes, I'd say it would. Should probably add something to that effect in the description of both We Named the Monkey "Jack" (or whatever the new name ends up as) and I Call It "Vera".
Which was my main issue. While pets are the more likely thing, there's other options.
Fight smart, not fair.^^People often name boats after people as well. Maybe there should be a more general supertrope about namesakery, covering this trope and Dead Guy Junior, as well as a lot of examples of I Call It "Vera" and even I Call Him "Mister Happy". Or just broaden this trope to that one.
Otherwise, a hard split of this trope seems unnecessary. It's already soft-split into 'type 1' and 'type 2', so why not call them respectively We Named the Monkey "Jack" and We Named The Dog Indiana? Would be nice to illustrate two flipsides of one trope with two famous movie quotes one of which is (probably) homaging the other.
Calling the crowner at 2:1 for "Do nothing to We Named the Monkey "Jack"."
...if you don’t love you’re dead, and if you do, they’ll kill you for it.
Crown Description:
What would be the best way to fix the page?
Quick commentary: "We named the dog Indiana" implies that Dr. Jones just picked up the name himself. Can it really be a "Namesake" if it's self-adopted?
Ketchum's corollary to Clarke's Third Law: Any sufficiently advanced tactic is indistinguishable from blind luck.
