Filthy, ignorant English FTW. I do generally prefer dubs, but have nothing against subbed and will be happy to go that route if its notably better / more readily available.

I watched the sub for series, what I saw from the dub seems rather meh.

But the dub for rebuilds is pretty good.

Nice to see some dub love, be it for the original or Rebuild. Any performances in particular you adored?

Also I like this.

I go with the dub for eva, because that's the version I first watched years ago. It might have even been the first anime I watched, actually.

Any performances in particular you adored?

Trina Nishimura kills it as Mari in the 2.0 dub.

I see he's courting the powerful Evangelion demographic in hopes that he can get a third term.

It might not be legal now but just wait until the otakus roll out.

The year 2014 is already halfway over. Clearly, the President intends for the rapidly-approaching Angel threat convince Congress to allow him a third term. As the bloody onslaught rages on, they will have no choice to rewrite policy after policy, forge alliances across the globe, fund the Obamavangelion project, and, ultimately, grant him    UNLIIMITED POWAAAAH!!!

So why is most of the fandom's judgment of Gendo's morality Shinji-centric? Before I watched Eva all I ever heard about "he did this to Shinji" or "did he actually love Shinji" and that persists even after I've seen the show. It seems to be pretty much everyone's primary argument when attempting to ascertain how much of a good or bad guy he was.

But now I've seen NGE, I know he ruined a few other peoples' lives besides Shinji's. A poster on another board said which characters you liked or disliked in Eva depended a lot on which ones you could identify with the most. I agree with that assessment and it so happens I sympathize more with Naoko and Ritsuko than Shinji and I wish more topics on how good or bad Gendo was included discussions of what he did to them.

[up] Does anyone make the argument that Gendo was a good guy? I mean, it pretty much comes down to Villian vs Insanity Defense.

Well I suppose you can get this sort in all types of fandoms but I've seen people who say Gendo wasn't so bad. Maybe "good guy" is pushing it a bit there are definitely people who say he wasn't a villain as all he wanted to do was be with his wife again.

I guess maybe it also has to do with what you think of Instrumentality. I never understood what the hell it was all about apart from everyone being turned into tang so I'm not sure if it counts as killing off the human race or not.

More double posting but I can't help it.

Many of the relationships in the series are rife with interpretations. Gendo and Shinji is a big one but what of Gendo and Fuyutsuki? Fuyu was another character I recall reading nothing about before I watched Eva and yet he turned out to be one of my favorites.

On the surface he and Gendo are both too in-control commander types and while Fuyu has his moments he disagrees with Gendo he never goes against his orders.

Yet we learn in Fuyu's flashback episode that at one time they were both in love with and pursuing the same woman. Back then Gendo was more of a punk than the no-nonsense guy we know now. Their relationship started off pretty rocky with Gendo "stealing" Yui away from him and then it wasn't helped when Fuyutsuki uncovered the whole SEELE conspiracy. Gendo then somehow convinced Fuyutsuki to join their "cause" and the two men were with each other until the end of their lives.

But why? What was the nature of their bond? Were they united in memory of Yui and pursuing her anti-SEELE plan? Did the two men actually like or respect each other? Old grudges tend to die hard iN Eva so maybe Fuyutsuki resented Gendo right up until the end? Did Gendo feel anything for Fuyutsuki or was he just another pawn?

[up] Gendo pretty clearly viewed everyone, including his own son, the human race and clones of the person he was doing all this be reunited with as pawns....so yeah, Fuyutsuki(if I'm even right on what that was), was probably one also. Maybe Fuyutsuki figured he would get another shot at Yui in the after-Tang. [lol]

So over the course of talking about their relationship elsewhere, I was informed that Gendo never knew about Yui's plan. She only told Fuyutsuki what she was up to and Gendo never knew it was her intent to have her soul moved into Unit 01. He thought it was an accident.

What a bitch.

Well, I kind of paraphrase from Evageeks but it is implied that Yui is just as childish as the rest of the cast.

To be fair, I gueess it must have soemthing to do wit the whole 'End of The Century' mentality that occured in the 80s and 90s. I quote from Tyler Durden:

“I see in the fight club the strongest and smartest men who've ever lived. I see all this potential and I see squandering. God damn it, an entire generation pumping gas, waiting tables, slaves with white collars, advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don't need. We're the middle children of the history man, no purpose or place, we have no Great war, no Great depression, our great war is a spiritual war, our great depression is our lives, we've been all raised by television to believe that one day we'd all be millionaires and movie gods and rock stars, but we won't and we're slowly learning that fact. and we're very very pissed off.”

To paraphrase, it is the most self indulgent thing that I had ever heard and yet that is how most people in the 80s and 90s felt.

What about Kaji? Angels attack, end of the world about to happen, and he just keeps on watering his garden while casually commenting on how he'd rather be tending to Misato's watermelons instead.

Kaji did have his demons but overall he seemed pretty much in tune with himself. He was the biggest bro on the show, it is shame that he was assassinated near the climax of the series.

Kaji worked for NERV/SEELE in some capacity, and therefore will be presumed to have at least one screw loose.
