F Ighting games are generally near the bottom of my to-play list, just slightly above sports games, but the Super Smash Bros franchise always rates high with me, since it breaks most of the conventions of the genre that I find so unpleasant.

I've never liked fighting games that don' have "Super Smash Bros." in the title.

Also, I've never really liked first-person shooters either, but I made an exception for Portal because (a) I loved the puzzle game element, (b) I heard the writing was awesome, and it lived up to the hype for once, and (c) unlike so many other FP Ses (due to Sturgeon's Law), it actually averts Rated M for Money in favor of actual good gameplay.

Most people who dislike RT Ss will make an exception for Starcraft.

Personally, I'm more fond of J-RPGs than W-RPGs, but I enjoyed Mass Effect 1 & 2, Dragon Age, Fallout 3, Fable 1 & 2, and Alpha Protocol.

I'm also not a big FPS fan, but I like Team Fortress 2, Borderlands, and Bioshock 1 & 2.

Is Mass Effect an RPG?

^^ This thread's about when you hate the genre, not like a similar one more.

^^Well, the second game feels more like a third person shooter with some RPG elements in it, while the first game was more of an RPG.

^I don't really hate genres, I just don't think certain ones are for me.

...so it's a shooter wearing a blanket that says RPG? Meh, theres a lot of WRPG that turns me away, and Mass Effect is definately one of them, as well as anything too Star Wars / Star Trek-ish...and anything else that uses Space Marines.

^^ Then the post probably should have noted that - nothing in it indicated that you weren't a fan of WRP Gs, only that you prefer eastern ones.

The first game has level gaining and loot, plus a lot of customization: Weapons, Armor, mods for them, and a whole lot of abilities to put points into. The second game still has levels, but has a lot less loot, which consists of money, various upgrades, and minerals to obtain said upgrades.

I could go on, but if you need more info, try the trope page or the Mass Effect Wikia.

Well, I'm not as interested in W-RPGs, and I play a lot more J-RPGs since I find them more interesting. I'm sorry if I broke a rule, it wasn't my intention.

That fact that you're likely to die figuring things out is part of what makes' Eternal Darkness Survival Horror. It's about surviving.

The only genre I tend to avoid is sports sims, and even then I wore out my bundle copy of Top Spin quite quickly.

And I think I see one of the reasons why the forums are so antipathic towards FPS. It's not necessarily the genre itself, but the kind of people who play them.

Half Life 2, Modern Warfare 1 and bioshock are my exceptions to the FPS genre.

I'm also usually not that big on mindless bloody gory violence, but I freaking loved Prototype.

For JRPGs the Mario And Luigi series. Other than that I just can't play any of them...

I hate the FPS genre with the exceptions of Metroid Prime and ANYTHING MADE BY VALVE.

Anything with split screen multiplayer is also passable.

I hate games based around sports. UNLESS it has the word Mario in front of it.

I really, really dislike classic RPGs (Strategy RPGs on the other hand I like), but Star Ocean 2, the Mother series, the Lunar series, and Pokemon are the exceptions.

I dislike sports games in general, but major exceptions are Racing games, as well as Wimbledon (excellent tennis game on Mega Drive).

"Classic" RP Gs? You mean JRPGS, or WRPGS?

I'm usually not a fan of story-heavy anime/animesque games, but the Ace Attorney series is a major exception.

What's a "classic" RPG? Ace gave some examples...but what makes them classic?
