Honestly I think I'd like Kanaya quite a bit more if she just had a different typing quirk.

The way her dialogue is written I've never been able to "hear" it except as her speaking in a slightly oblivious monotone. Like she just says things without putting any real thought into anything she says.

Kanaya has always seemed kind of dim or slow to me. Anyone else ever think of her that way?

Not the first time I've heard that, but this is one comment that honestly amuse me. I've seem enough people who are bothered by her quirk to recognize it is a thing, but I honestly think it hers is one of the most straightfoward of the bunch (the troll bunch, I mean). I don't "hear" it as monotone per se, more like as very paused and clear.

As for her being "dim or slow", I know what you mean. I don't think she is unintelligent as she doesn't seem to have problem at actually understanding things once explained, but she is a bit slow to actually get there.

I see her as someone whose thinking patter are a bit out of sync with the others. She say stuff in a convoluted way because this is the most natural way for her, and she doesn't understand what people mean often because that is not how her brain function. Using math as an example, if most people think "A=B and B=C therefore A=C", Kanaya goes with "A=B, A=C therefore C=B"

I see her as the exact opposite. With all the first letters capitalized it makes me think she really knows what she wants to say most of the time.

I agree with DPR up there. I always saw Kanaya as highly intelligent, regardless of her typing quirk.

Yeah, Kanaya's quirk always struck me as "precise" rather than "dim".

Kanaya's still my favorite if only because I love how nice she is.

As for quirks, I always read her as enunciating everything she says, speaking in a somewhat "posh" manner (probably helped by most voice actors giving her a british accent).

I've considered everything Kanaya says to be very pronounced and formal. Like a sophisticate, but without much of the tact.

Also, I too thought she was going to put the Matriorb in her sylladex, but I figured that Hussie just forgot all about sylladices...

Though Vriska had John's Dad's wallet, so that was something.

Well, part of that is that most of the remaining characters are God Tiers, and most of them lost their sylladices when they were killed.

I always imagined Kanaya talked like Aigis in Persona.

It's funny that you took her quirk to be careless placement, when I found it as indicating very carefully arranged speech.

I mean, I can see someone seeing her as thinking a bit oddly, a la Heatth, but not really... dim. Remember that "ambush" where she went on about time travel to Rose? Considering that she was thirteen at the time, I'd have thought it'd rule out stupid, if nothing else.

It's really just weird to see someone who thinks she's not actually pretty smart, really.

Addendum: Ah I did the thing where I responded to an old post after the fact because of timing constraints whilst voicing an opinion in line with most of the thread excepting one person again.

I think I agree with most of the thread. Though I don't think I have a favorite character in Homestuck for the time being.

I read Kanaya's quirk in the same voice I read the annoying You Tube spam comments that advertise the Lord Jesus on a Minecraft video. Mainly because they usually use the same quirk, but with a lot more special characters.

It's not that I see it as careless placement, quite the opposite. I hear her as speaking very clearly and carefully enunciating just like everyone, and I hear her with a posh sort of accent as well. At the same time though it sounds monotonous and very slow.

To me it feels like Kanaya puts on a deliberate affectation of being clever and elegant when it's not her natural state. And pretty much just like Ninety said, I don't think of her as DUMB. In my experience there aren't really smart or dumb people, only people who are good and bad at specific aspects of interaction. She just thinks in a weird, more roundabout way than most of the characters.

She reminds me of the characters in Discworld who are called slow, in fact. The author was very clear that this didn't mean they were stupid, but they think through every little point of dialogue slowly and carefully. An expert conman in one of the books pointed out that these people were very difficult to fool, because they never jumped to the conclusions he wanted them to jump to.

Ah. Now that, I can see a lot better.

Very different from what I always thought, but now it actually makes sense to me.

Speaking of Discworld, I'm still proceeding through the series, in order (barring things I read before I decided to take it from the top) because my library lets me order books in. It's, of course, very good. Currently on Hogfather.

Okay, that I can see. "Dim" isn't really a word I'd use to describe that sort of thing, though. But yes, I can see her as being overly meticulous and careful about how she speaks.

Not Kanaya but I've always liked how Ridcully's intellect is described.

Paraphrased: Ridcully is, in fact, quite intelligent. He doesn't immediately seem like it, having a mind much like a freight train: fast, unstoppable, and almost impossible to change the course of once it's gotten up to speed.

Ridcully's great.

I always liked Ponder, myself, but Ridcully is indeed great. Anyways, I had a stupid idea.

Also bipedal height advantage, great binocular vision, and top-notch hand-eye coordination. Being human is pretty sweet.
