I just HAD to break hiatus to post this. Check their site out.

So, Eclipse really is disbanding after five years. They're probably one of the greatest fansubbers ever, and it's a damn shame to see them go.

Thoughts, comments, anything? Who's going to replace them as the new gods of fansubbing quality?

... I've never heard of them .___.

I'm disappointed to see any fansubber go, though.

I have heard of them, although I've never actually watched anything subbed by them. Still, if they're that good, it sucks that they're going.

I guess it is.

This is a great loss to the fansubbing community. D:

Oh, huh. One of their group is a regular on a board I frequent so this feels slightly personal to me.

I hate to sound insensitive, but fansubbing isn't really something I care about. I'll watch the stuff people fansub and I respect them for doing that, but I'm not about to give 'em TOO much respect. They are, after all, criminals.

Then again maybe it's just because I don't think I've ever watched their subs.

I have to say, though, I'm glad this thread isn't about Twilight.

^ I'm not sure why being a criminal inherently means a person doesn't deserve respect. Especially since you're apparently still willing to watch what they produce.

I dunno. I guess I'm exaggerating, but it just has been bugging me for a while now how casually anime fans will pirate. It's not like the music industry, which can survive without your support. If people keep on pirating, something's gotta give eventually, whether it's the anime licensing industry, the anime industry, or the ability for the fansubbers and torrenters to get away with what they're doing anymore.

Maybe, and people should probably be more willing to buy anime that's licensed in their own country, but if it's anime that's not available in your own country (or at least, in a language you understand), you're pretty much screwed unless you resort to fansubs. And, at least, for me, watching fansubs/reading scanlations will actually increase my chances of actually buying the series if it gets licensed (not necessarily by a lot, granted, since I have no job and therefore I don't really have a lot of spending money), since I don't want to spend money on a series if I don't know it'll be good.

@Knight: Look at the link in the OP. They're going to finish it, but it might take a while.

@Spork: Groups like this are typically subbing stuff that hasn't been licensed, though. I mean, sure, some of the shows will get licenced, and people will still watch the pirated versions, but that's hardly the subbers' fault. A lot of them actually take the links down from their site if the show gets licensed, but it's impossible to take them off P2P.

But they left Amagami SS in mid season which was sad for me I am usually very loyal to fansub groups.

Again, give them credit for stopping right at the end of Sae's arc. Go get UTW's now, theirs is also very good.

Raw Power: Though yes, they can be arrogant, they don't show it, and they do get the job done very well, so at the end of the day, who gives a fuck? Better than arrogant yet does the job... not so well (hello Coal Guys).

(hello Coal Guys).
:[ I love Coal Guys. Well, at any rate, their subs for B Gata H Kei seemed better than the other groups that were doing it. And their K-On!! subs usually seem to be pretty good.

They were very... Liberal with their tranlastion for B Gata H Kei..

They were. But I thought it worked for that series pretty well. Face it, "Hai~!" was always meant to be translated as "AWW SHIT!"

Yeah, I've never seen anything else by Coal Guys besides B Gata H Kei. I think their "liberal" translation style would be bad for a lot of series, including K-On!, but you couldn't have asked for a better fansub group to do B Gata H Kei. It totally fit the tone of the series.
