Welcome, to TvTropes' very own Magic The Gathering game thread!

Let's get some things out of the way before we start. Newcomers, listen up. This isn't your standard wacky Forum Game.

This thread is for card games of Magic: The Gathering. It's generally expected that you use a shuffled deck with a minimum of 60 cards and maximum of 4 each of unique non-land cards. It's perfectly acceptable to play with cards you don't actually own; just use a program for randomizing and drawing cards. I use Magic Assistant for that. Exceptions to any of these things are fine provided you get consent of everyone involved.

Since the games will take place entirely in text, it's suggested that you use your posts to keep track of life totals, hand count, and everything in play. It may also be helpful to keep track of your hand by posting it as a spoiler. Please link to newly introduced cards using Gatherer. All that said, redundant information isn't necessary, especially since it can slow down a game.

Commentary, questions, and rules-lawyering is welcome. You shouldn't overdo it, but don't let your apprehensions get in the way of participating. If you're taking it a bit to far, we can let you know. Remember, there's a M:TG topic in the Table Top Games board. You're free to go there for lengthy off-topic discussions.

Finally, there should not be more than one game taking place at a time. If you want to start a game while another is in progress, either make a new thread, wait your turn, or ask permission. On second thought, nevermind. The thread seems to be fine with two games going on at a time.

All right, let's get this show on the plane!

What sort of game shall we start with?

We were talking about tricolor Star last night, weren't we? Well, that and free-for-all.

I don't really feel like a free-for-all. I would be up for tri-color or mono-color star.

But I'm not gonna post much more today. I need to study and take a nap.

I haven't played in a long time, what's "star"?

It's one of the many variants of the game. Five players sit in a circle and play a deck of a single color that matches the position of the color wheel on the back of MTG cards.

The winner is the first one whose two "enemy" colors (the ones sitting on the opposite side) die first.

@Haven: See the color wheel on the back of the Magic cards? Every player picks a deck with one of those colors (or, in the case of tricolor, with three of the colors that are next to each other, like GRB). The people with colors to your sides are allies, everyone else needs to die in a fire.

But it's just a variant, it's possible to use other set-ups too.

I guess it could work with any deck, really.

OH **** YES.

First of all, thank you for introducing me to Magic Assistant. I have this neat deck I'd like to try out sometime, if anyone's interested.

Oh sweet, a Text Duels thread on TV Tropes? Good timing too, I've been seriously craving a game lately. I'll need to come up with a deck.

Screw it, I'll just look one up.

The annoying thing about Magic Assistant, though, is that a lot of the library-affecting effects can't be used. sad

You can just use MWS in solo mode. 'Swhat I do.

Anyway, I forgot that I actually made a deck the other day in a fit of boredom. I'm just tweaking it a bit, but I can play whenever someone wants.
