We'll have to see. Latest news on that is an Irish MEP who got arrested in the news for protesting it. He wasn't even invited to that meeting.

SMA: Army looking to recruit 80,000 new soldiers in 2018

The Army is looking at another end strength increase in 2018, and, this time, the focus will be on recruiting new soldiers, the service’s top enlisted leader said Monday.

Following a 26,000-person increase in 2017, the Army has asked for another 17,000 for the total force this coming year. The plan is to focus most of the effort on recruiting, Sergeant Major of the Army Dan Dailey told Army Times during a senior enlisted leader panel at the Pentagon.

“We did so well last year in our in-service retention program that our in-service retention, actually, is not that significant of a number, because we’ve already accomplished … the preponderance of that in [fiscal year 2017],” he said.

Chaser:

Military branches battle for prized young recruits

More than 80 percent of young people interviewed for an annual Department of Defense survey indicated they weren't leaning toward a future in the military. Compounding the problem, some estimates show that only 25 percent in that age group would meet the minimum qualifications to enlist.

So recruiters beat the bushes to find youth interested in enlisting who also could qualify for the service. They spend long hours out in the community. Finding 50 new Marines can entail an average of 10,000 contacts ranging from a few minutes to an hour, said Marine spokesman Justin Kronenberg.

HANGOVER:

Top Enlisted Leaders Push Back: There Is No Readiness ‘Crisis’

..Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said he was “shocked” at the military’s poor state of readiness when he returned to the Pentagon as its civilian leader. And lawmakers have grown increasingly concerned that 2017’s plane crashes, ship collisions, and other non-combat deaths are evidence that the military is breaking under the strain of 16 years of war. Just last week, a U.S. Navy C-2A Greyhound transport plane crashed in the western Pacific, killing three sailors.

The enlisted leaders said observer in and out of the Pentagon aren’t wrong to say more demands are being placed on the services. Investigations found that several of the Navy’s recent collisions at sea, for example, were at least partly the result of overworked or under-trained crews.

But “from my perspective, from a joint perspective, I don’t think we’re in crisis right now,” said Army Command Sgt. Maj. John Troxell, the senior enlisted adviser to the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

You know maybe if they wanted more recruits they would make the military actually more appealing to young people rather then just complaining about it.

But as it is, it is a job at which you risk your life, for zero advancement opportunity unless your an officer any more (no way to transition between enlisted and officer any more), the benefits have been slashed to hell and back, your healthcare isn't worth a damn even if your injured defending your country.

Oh and to top it all off, it is well known by virtually every one that recruiters lie there asses off to get you.

Coming from some one who at one point was interested in joining the JASDF, the military really needs an image makeover if it wants to recruit.

Well, yeah, if they want people to work for them, they should improve conditions and future prospects. Nobody wants to, say, become a top-class submarine sonar technician, only to find absolutely no use for that skill in civilian life.

The irony I found on leaving the (UK) armed forces was similar skills transitions - but my engineering colleagues found it harder, as whilst they were trained and partly accredited, a lot of industry (Oil and Gas, manufacturing, even minor engineering areas) were so heavily involved with local groups or established interests (not quite Unions, but contractors who basically owned most of the roles) meant they couldn't get work.

Here, we have still got enlisted to officer transition - either as Late Entry (Promoted to WO 1 and then commission as a Captain) or direct application to Sandhurst.(Commission as a 2Lt); but there's stil la huge retention issue due to slashed budgets, not adventure training or experience days and little to no options on varied deployments now.

Looks like you guys have it worse. They really do seem to treat you like mere cogs there do do a job and be happy that you're doing it for your country.

US Air Force offers a couple of commissioning options, including applying for the Air Force Academy, a couple of different ROTC programs (including one where you attend college on active duty and another where you separate to go to college), and one specific for people wanting to go to school and become nurses.

Dunno.

ICC declared said courtroom a crime scene and Croats/his lawyer are accusing the judges of putting a lot of pressure on him even though he surrendered.

As I understand, he wasn't even on trial. It was an appeals hearing where they were deciding whether or not to uphold his previous conviction.

And in other news:

It's official: The Army is bringing drill sergeants back to AIT

For much of 2017, Army Training and Doctrine Command kept hinting that the advanced individual training platoon sergeant experiment was over.

As of Nov. 17, the Army has decided to bring drill sergeants back to AIT, after receiving a sign-off by Ray Horoho, the acting assistant Army secretary for manpower and reserve affairs.

“Currently, USACIMT is working with Department of the Army-level staff and other stakeholders to get all the required administrative pieces in place before implementation can begin,” Lt. Col. Jeffrey Pray, a spokesman for the Center for Initial Military Training, told Army Times. “However, we do expect drill sergeants to start transitioning to AIT in 2018.”

As a vet who went through AIT with drills and saw the latter soldiers who went to AIT with regular soldiers, I clutch my DD 214 and say:
