I dunno if this was mentioned in the anime, but in the beginning of the Saiyan Saga in the manga, Gohan said to Piccolo he didn't want to train because he wanted to become a scholar instead of a fighter.

Granted, he was only four at the time, so he could have probably just been following Chi-Chi's wishes for him.

That sounds deliberate. Funi's Super dub is pretty liberal with the scripting after all.

I could see it being either way. A line like that would not have the same implications in Japan as it would in the English speaking world. (I don't say America, because America isn't the only country with that notable strain of racism.)

Actually, in context he (Trunks) has to say that because the name Goku won't mean as much.

Trunks himself says everyone calls him...well, that.

It's still massively cringeworthy though. Was there any other line he could have used that would have had the same meaning?

"That's not Goku Black"

"That's not him"

"That's not the target"

See. I just wanted to be sure. I wondered if maybe it seemed easier than it was, but nope. They did choose the absolute worse way to put it.

Even simply "that's not Black" would have been way less awkward.

I've been trying to make such jokes this whole arc, but I don't think I can top that.

Slightly awkward, but I laughed.

Makes sense though since Trunks is pointing out that it was not Black Goku.

'Don't shoot, he's orange!'

"Don't shoot, it's a waste of your ammo."

"Just saiyan don't shoot"
