Well, it turns out it's possible for a dwarf to remove a set of up/down stairs while standing on said stairs. It turns out it's also possible for the dwarf to do this on stairs hanging directly over magma.

If the question is "is it possible for a dwarf to do this criminally stupid verging on suicidal thing", the answer is almost certainly yes.

if something seems so utterly stupid and impossible that it can't POSSIBLY be true, it's not only true, but exceptionally easy for a dwarf to do if you look away for a moment.

My computer crashed while I was playing my latest fort, so I lost an hour or so of progress. :( Guess it's time to quit that fort, since I hate redoing anything.

Just tried adventure mode today for the first time. Got killed by bogeymen. Maybe I'll give it another shot.

The trick is to be a hearthperson and find some local soldiers to bring along. No trouble with bogeymen as long as you keep others with you.

I made another copy of the game, deleted the saves off it, and rolled out with Phoebus tileset. I like this one. My current fortress is rolling in brown recluse silk, so we've got a bunch of robes for trading. Not half bad. I still like one of my old forts where we were rolling in so much kaolinite we had the dining hall filled with china statues.

So yeah . . . if I follow the themes of the artwork in my current fortress when making policy decisions, this is going to be an interesting fort. A lot of it is self aggrandizing historical stuff about us founding ourselves. No big deal. Other stuff . . . there's quite a bit about humans getting the stuffings kicked out of them by everything under the sun. It paints the picture of a fortress of nationalistic racist bastards. My first artifact was a Phyllite door depicting our founding. Awesome historical stuff worth over 27,000 Dorfbucks. The second one was a green glass weapon rack depicting a goblin slaying a human during one of their sieges. It's almost like Armok WANTS us to go to war with the humans. Which is fine, once I get my ten hammerdwarves trained well enough and backed up by another squad or two of other stuff. An ax squad and a spear squad, I think.

This is going to be a Fun fort.

So personalities are really going to shine in the next release.

http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/

From today's devlog:

". . . We had a dwarven dancer become so talented a century into one world gen that he invented his own complete dance form, and the bold inventor decided to pattern the motions of the dance on a troglodyte attack he suffered in his youth. This important knowledge was then passed down to several students and then out into the world via a performance troupe."

When this next release comes out, I'm going to start nicknaming my Dwarves after personality traits. Just gotta figure out how to do it so I can figure out where to put them at a glance.

I'm still waiting for there to be a personality type that will incline the dwarf to actually dump stuff marked for dumping...

Many dwarves are not inclined to work. tongue And dumping is probably a low-priority item, so you might want a dedicated hauler core that's split up among different types of hauling. Including trash dwarves.

Same. In the current run, some of my idlers are also training fodder for the medics. After last night's violation of a trade ban on bracelets, a lot of them are. And some useful people are chained up for most of a month.

We've gone full Dwarven Dystopia and the only people I'm considering for Noble status are either soldiers or survivors of the medical program.

And a Dragon was our first uninvited guest. It shot flames as tortoises and then went down easily to our Hammerlords. Though two died to the flames after the fact and the entire surface is in the process of burning and lowering FPS. So overall, we're still a dystpoia. The game seems to approve. [lol]

Haunted Tundra is a classic standby. Terrifying if you really like the undead.

Embarking near a Tower is another, if you once again really like the undead.

Sieges in the latest version are sporadic, so you'll want some other challenge. Like running a Dwarven Dystopia and actually keeping it running even though every fifth Dwarf dies a horrible gruesome death by being dropped twenty Z-levels into the middle of the creche so the children are horribly traumatized until they just don't give a shit anymore . . .

@Tarsen: I hope the murk doesn't do ya in immediately! I had a few rough experiences with the evil biomes ending in skeletal yaks. It's something of a running gag for my evil forts to die by skeletal yak.

honestly, i think the biggest problem is less the mucus and more the fact that no one will cut trees to get wood.

i received a message saying the equipment was incompatible, so i think i embarked with the wrong type of axe for the task...somehow.

im pretty sure i used the default axe but whatever.

anyway, this has combined with the fact that theres no stone above the aquifer in order to prevent me from really doing anything right now

That should not happen. Any ax will work. Even wooden training axes.

ETA: Dig into the dirt and set up stockpiles for everything inside the wagon. Deconstruct it and use the three wood to make a carpenter and a training ax or two. That will help with the trees.

I picked up the game again, and I don't seem to have the problems with my dwarves stopping all their work anymore!

My new map is really cool, but also really frustrating. I've never seen anything like it before. My embark area was in the middle of a flood-plane with a river emptying into it. Right off the bat, I had to move everything from my wagon to higher ground lest I lose it to flooding. The hill I chose ended up turning into a neat little island to build my fortress on.

It took a year for most of the area to flood, and it killed my FPS the whole time. The flood was draining off the edge of the map too, so it wasn't going to stop. I decided I need to dam the river.

I'm well into my third year now, and all my attempts have been unsuccessful. I've had a couple dozen dwarves worth of Fun, too. I'm out of ideas and turning to the internet for ideas now, because I'm all out. I've found a couple methods that look promising, but I'm not sure how well they'll work in this instance. In order to keep my island an island, I need to dam the valley mouth, not the river, and the outflow is several times what a normal river puts out. It may overwhelm them.

how about a floating hallway mostly made out of glass to see the enemies being crushed while they approach?

-facepalm-

oookay i figured out what went wrong

i didnt give dwarf therapist a good enough inspection before i started changing jobs so i ended up confusing carpentry with wood cutting and ended up un-tagging wood cutting and then later, when i tried to get it back, i was tagging carpentry.

I don't know how to solve your river thing, unfortunately, but I think your map sounds really interesting. Mind sharing a picture?

Sure, here you go. I'm still mad that my control channel didn't work. The reservoir drains into it, and it has floodgates to cut off the flow, but the reservoir doesn't back up. It just keeps flowing down into the channel without filling up.

All my other plans have to work around the thing, and the whole place is a mess now.
