Is There Really A Point To This? (New Crowner Jan.18): Ralph Wiggum

It strikes me that if we have a crowner at +51 for a new definition that invalidates most of the examples, then we should just remove those examples. This is hardly the first time we removed a lot of examples from a trope page.

Putting this in YMMV won't accomplish anything: that'd just make it a copy of an existing page, except in YMMV.

My opinion is to cut it, just like that. The new definition from the crowner fits with almost no example in the page and has nothing to do with the current one. It's like cutting the page and making a new one with no relation at all. We already have YKTTW for new tropes.

But sincerely, as long as something gets done, I don't care much.

The previous crowner effectively voted 9.5:1 to cut this trope and start a new one.

I'm fine with cutting and throwing the new one in YKTTW, if that's the best way to achieve the crowner outcome. I'm just saying that since we have a very big crowner here that suggests a particular course of action, then we absolutely should not just throw a YMMV tag on the page and call it a day.

It's pretty much the only way to achieve the crowner outcome, except you're never going to get this page cut. Seriously, nearly 1,000 wicks and 300 inbounds? Good luck trying to get that done.

All The Ditz needs in its present form is the YMMV tag. It already even has an Audience Reaction central to defining such a character:

The only significant change that needs to be made to the description is to identify The Ditz as the character archetype for ensemble characters who fulfill a character role by being stupid. All The Ditz is now (and ever will be) is a list of characters that individual editors just think are really dumb.

Also, I don't really see a difference between "cutlist and move to YKTTW" and "cut most examples and discuss in this thread what the header should be".

That's a fine solution. Remove the page's current content, leave it as a redirect to The Ditz and re-YKTTW the Dumber Than Dumb page people claim to want, now no longer attaching to to it The Ralph Wiggum's other meanings.

I guess that if we do that we'll need another TRS to make a good definition for The Ditz and clean up every example that doesn't fit.

I'm still for cutting this completely, no redirects or anything else. The new definition can start in YKTTW without having any problem for this.

The Ditz is fine. A character archetype defined by stupidity.

Unless there are a number of characters who aren't stupid in any capacity being mentioned in examples and wicks, then there shouldn't be anything wrong with it.

I said it in case we make The Ditz a redirect, in order to prevent Trope Decay and make it "stupid characters Up To Eleven" like it happened here.

Why don't we redlink The Ditz and make it a disambiguation page.

If it's a disambig page, it's by definition not a redlink.

Okay, but it should be a choice between that or YKTT Wing a new trope and making The Ditz a redirect to that. Because letting it be is no longer an option.

A literal cut is not going to happen. The redirect option is an effective cut.

If someone YKTTWs a trope that fits The Ditz better, the redirect can be changed. In the mean time, that's a hypothetical article. I really don't understand why anyone wants to yank the steering wheel so close to finally reaching a destination.

My suggestion remains: Single prop crowner (Y/N?) to replace everything in Ralph Wiggum with [[redirect:TheDitz]].
