Project Wonderful has already been mentioned... as a service which paid a laughably tiny fraction of what Google does.

Also: Is someone gonna edit The Advertisement Server trope page about the event? Perhaps someone who knows more about what's going on etc..

It's all part of his evil plan to take over the world, i tells ye!

Aoede: which only makes sense if you hand yourself over in a silver platter only for the money. If there were some webcomics (EDIT: or anything, really) that had to fall outside of Google's ad reach, then I don't see why an (alternate) ad provider wouldn't be set up for those sections, as even if pay only a fraction of Google, it is still money that TV Tropes wouldn't have otherwise.

EVEN MORE CLARIFYING EDIT: yeah, that would mean segregating the site at the logical level, and yeah, that's the thing I have to talk to my teacher about tomorrow.

Don't we have the Adsense ads for those?

And it's impossible to add a third Adserver for particular trope sections to allow TV Tropes to get even more money (even if it is a fraction of standard google ads) why?

EDIT: i.e. Exactly what Silent Reverence said?

Uhh guys, here's a thought.

Have you considered implementing a similar model to Something Awful for the forums?

Not necessarily on the scale of what SA does/charges but something like a $1 charge for changing your Avatar?

I know a lot of people would hate it but it's better than nothing if the site's in dire financial straits.

Slightly offtopic, but can we not keep cutlisting the NSFG articles, please?

I'm zapping the crude redirects because fuck those, but I'm not cutting any content over this, not unless I get orders from above, anyway.

^ Again, Paypal wouldn't even let some of us donate, so I really hope it doesn't come to that.

And charging to change avatars would cause some huge drama here due to the nature of these forums.

↑↑↑↑So long as there is still a way to normally change avatars, even if it is a free avatar change per month, I'd see no problem. I mean, even if you can't pay, you are supposed to be able to change your avatar if, say, there is a mod mandate to do so, or the original file in the server got somehow corrupted, or avatar properties across the forums are changed so your content will have to be readapted anyway.

EDIT: seeing people here won't like it, the "still have a free change every once in a while" precondition is more than in order...

Frankly, what would be the problem with adult ads on the NSFW pages? The pages themselves are already NSFW, so people wouldn't be bugged by the adult ads at work, since looking at the pages at work would be a bad idea in the first place.

Besides, there's anime adult ads out there.

Are anime adult ads supposed to be somehow more pleasant to look at or less incriminating when in company?

But yes, I did assume "the pages are already NSFW" was the reasoning in that suggestion. Putting NSFW ads on the rest of the wiki would be a spectacularly bad idea.

^^ The problem with that reasoning, comparing NSFW ads with NSFW trope/work pages, is that it's a lot more obvious to someone looking from afar at what's on the screen when the subject matter is graphics than it is when it's text. Also, even for outright NSFW things like the porn tropes, they're still not anywhere near as explicit as the ads tend to be, thanks to what's generally considered acceptable behavior on TV Tropes. You don't, for example, see text explicitly describing the act of penetration, with a level of detail that would enable most people to visualize said act.

Mind you, I'm not saying that NSFW ads are teh debil, and I personally am not going to shriek hysterically if I see a guy porking some chick. Just kinda playing Devil's Advocate a bit, here.

Bobby, the cutlisting of all those main pages was a case of severe overreaction by someone who was acting on old information. It's hoped that he's gotten the message.

and Aoede, Adsense is Google. Or vice versa. Whichever way it works, they're the same thing.

NSFW ads will get us blacklisted and blocked at public libraries and schools all over the place. That's a very bad idea.

NSFW ads are generally... really NSFW. As opposed to mature analyses of topics that are nonetheless off-color.

We still have a policy on explicit images, and I can't see any inclination to seek out ads that cross that.

Do you highlight everything looking for secret messages?

Would it be needlessly snarky to open an Image Pickin' topic about the page image for Sex Sells? Because ads for Evony always look like porn site ads.

Also, thanks to TV Tropes, I can't write "Evony" without thinking of My Immortal.

Cheers Mada. As long as the page stays unlocked and no one objects, I may toss some other FA Qs on there.

In the meantime, I saw this ad on the page. Oh bother...

The ad itself is...borderline, about in line with "borderline" Evony ads...but the site it links to, best I can gather from Google without visiting it, is NSFW and the first hits from Google that aren't the site or related services are for sites like ripoffreport.com
