I was sort of assuming from today that the art changes are actually in-story related to the end of the comic, since the characters are occasionally aware that they're in one.

I think Matthew wants to end it with a Bittersweet Ending. He admitted he doesn't like sugary "everything is awesome" (EVERYTHING IS AWESOME!) endings in the past (such as the Falcon's date arc). I'm not crazy at the idea, but he usually plays it off as a joke anyway. I do hope for some moments of heartwarming though.

Something like that already happened in BITF. Pichu in Melee evolved and did away with the "Old" Pikachu to get into Brawl.
Which makes sense because Blue Pikachu has the goggles instead of the Wizard hat. Plus, Pikachu couldn't walljump in Melee, but Pichu could, and Pikachu can walljump in Brawl.
