The Spoony Experiment: The Thread

He's mentioned it several times back when he made vids (without going into specifics). There were the reasons for some of the long delays between vids when he would produce more regularly as his health issues would keep him from working on videos for weeks on end.

He has mentioned having health problems several times on his Twitter, both in terms of his physical health (sleep apnea, combined with some sort of heart condition, I believe) and mental health (depression combined with anxiety, I think).

That's the frustrating thing with Spoony—his fans are well aware of his health issues and his inability to keep a schedule. I doubt anybody subscribing to his Patreon expected weekly videos out of him, something many other people are capable of doing, and he still let everyone down.

I hope he gets his health and mental issues under control. I'd love to see more content from him. But it's definitely annoying to hear a man who's almost literally been receiving money for nothing complaining about his finances. I've never been a subscriber so I'm not even mad at him, but I absolutely understand anyone who has and is.

This Metokur guy is one of those dumbass anti-social justice YouTubers, I'd advise not giving him clicks. As for Spoony being fired, given my research on old posts in this thread it seems he was fired for some incredibly blatant sexual harassment and rape-y remarks towards Jesu Otaku that Lupa called him out on, and to this day she still gets blamed for his firing despite even Spoony coming out to defend her.

Either way, I'm still surprised people would stir up a conspiracy about a guy who barely even does anything anymore that dates all the way back to 2012. It's been five years.

In his commentary to To Boldly Flee, Noah says (and it was five years ago and the video seems not to be available anymore, so I might not remembering it all that well) that the Lupa incident wasn't the reason for his departure from the site, though he admits it didn't help. IIRC, Spoony claims he left TGWTG on his own because he felt it wasn't profitable to be on the site anymore. He also cites some conflicts with the site management (not Doug and Rob) as another reason.

This. Benzaie made very similar points about his own departure from the website so I'm tempted to believe it. Basically the entire point of TGWTG was to get more views (people come to see a video by Linkara, then they watch something by Sage or Lupa) but in reality it only ever was a gain for Doug (people come to see the Nostalgia Critic and no one else). Add to that the fact that the other reviewers had to pay from their own pocket to participate to special events and got none of the benefits, and the restrictions that management imposed regarding monetisation among other things, and at some point the channel just became a liability.

Still a bit fuzzy but his blatant sexual harassment towards Jesu Otaku didn't help him, and it was partially of his own volition. I do explicitly remember people calling out Lupa's harassers because she got a lot of fucking death threats mailed to her for Spoony's departure and it leaves a really sour taste in my mouth. Poor woman got a lot of shit handed to her.

He clearly doesn't care anymore he utterly despises his audience hes not even hiding it anymore. why do people still pay him to make nonexistant content in which he shits on his audience and then cuts it off early

Spoony still has some tremendous lotalty with people for some reason.

There’s a particular Twitter convo with a parody Spoony account where a fan admits that he stopped contributing due to being disabled but as soon as he gets disability he will start again. The parody account actually breaks character for a bit telling him “no, keep your money, you need it more.”

And this is despite him not making anything of substance for at least two years.

I mean you'll find that in any fandom. He's down to less than 10% of what he made. I have no doubt that he has enough fans who don't mind donating. Especially when 136 of the 170 remaining patrons give 1$ per month, which for individual patrons, is chump change.

Ultimately its their money and however they want to spend it is up to them.

To be honest, you could ask same thing about why you guys keep bumbing up this thread Like, its pretty clear his depression got to the point where he doesn't seem to have energy or interest to produce stuff anymore. Returning to converse about it every once in while isn't really going to change that. Neither is going to complain about how he should shut down his patreon, so might as well just let it rest, people pay for more weirder things anyway.
