Sexism In Anime

I always though they will go for the taijutsu, kenjutsu and Genjutsu se, with Sakura using genjutsu, Naruto Taijutsu and Sasuke kenjutsu, but it never devolpt into anything.

If anything im surprise on how limited Obito power set is compared to others, he relies a lot in his intangible men Status which why I like him better than Pain.

I like Pain's actual ability to control six bodies but the whole "Rinnegan has a million different abilities" is just completely asanine.

The Rinnegan? It just works.

Hinata seemed to have genuine combat abilities in part 2, but her only "fight" was against Pain, so…

That took gigantic balls. Eeeer, you know what I mean. It was hugely brave.

And kinda stupid.

It didn't make things worse, considering Pain was about to win. Reckless, yes, but it isn't something like Sakura thinking she can kill Sasuke with a poisoned Kunai and nearly killing Naruto.

am I allowed to talk LGBTQ+ representation on here, or is that for a different thread?

I don't think it is quite on topic, but it is something I would be happy to discuss given that LGBT in Japan is a topic I have years of personal experiance with. :)

There doesn't seem to be a thread for LGBT, so talking about it on this one makes sense to me. Unless the admins disagree.

There is a high chance it will just get locked as a straight up complaint thread because that is what it will end up being.

So there's something that's kind of bugged me for a while.

In Digimon, you typically have the goggle headed leader and his main rival/lancer character. Tai and Matt in Adventure, Takuya and Koji in Frontier, Marcus and Thomas in Data Squad. But there are two entries in this trope that have bugged me for a bit.

One is Davis and Ken from 02 but Ken wasn't really a rival and fits more the "former villain turned ally" role like Gatomon and Impmon. But the one that bugs me the most though are Takato and Henry from Tamers. Takato and Henry have a grand total of one argument in the show and it barely counts as an argument any way. But you know who does fit the rival character more? Rika. She's got a canine themed Digimon like most other rivals, has a blue digivice, has a mega digimon (in fact the first female character with a mega digimon in canon) and has clashed with Takato physically and philosphically a number of times.

Yet in official or unofficial art work, I see Henry placed in with rival characters despite him having nothing in common with them while Rika would.

I guess what I'm trying to get at is, is Rika's gender some kind of obstacle to her being acknowledged as a rival? Especially since it's so rare in fiction to have a rival of opposite gender?

Will LGBT issues in anime/manga automatically be a complaint thread? I mean, there’s positive examples as well as negative ones, even if the former tend to be a wee bit ghettoised. Could be an opportunity to point folks towards obscure but good stories as well as discuss certain series’ failings.

i just wanted to bring up how most of the shonen I consume tends to be legendarily bad at handling gay characters, if they handle them at all. Are there any notable outliers?In between the sex offenders, and that guy in One Piece who fights with hormones, it's hard not to lose hope.

But Ivankov is so compelling and charismatic and awesome!

I wouldn't call Ivankov any of those thing so much I call him just being a fun character. Then again I feel like I insulted someone when I just said Ivankov a guy just now, so really what I would know?

Its a holdover from media in general not a shonen problem, rather then a hatred of gay people there is more of a...... not understanding that goes on in Japan, stemming from the fact that most peoples only exposure is the onee that you see in media.....

Which means that you only really get.... what you do, because no one really has any exposure outside of onee and stereotypes in the first place.

It is a bit of a problem yes and self fulfilling one at that.... but I am too tired to explain more at the moment, if you have questions I can answer them when I wake up.

As for good examples, Yuri on Ice is the best one I hear yes..... but you are correct to assume that most examples you see just..... wont be like that.... thee is still a lot of social issues to work on.

The biggest problem I have with Ivaknov are the Unfortunate Implications of him transforming men into women to make them be subservient to him during the escape from Impel Down.

For a good LGBT manga I strongly recommend Shimanami Tasogare.

Speaking of LGBT, I'm surprised at My Hero Academia for featuring not one, not two, but three transgender people. (Okay one of them is just nameless character who appears for one panel in a flashback).

One of them is heroic, and one of them is a villain. They even had one of them be MTF and the other FTM. Some characters even bother to correct it when another guys used the wrong pronoun. The villain one isn't even Played For Laugh at all.

Whether they fit western standard is YMMV, but by shounen manga standards (which is pretty damn fucking low), this treatment of transgenders stands out a lot.

…Wait, I think the villain one is Magne, but which is the hero one?

Tiger from the Wild Pussy Cats (yknow the bara guy) in an omake it is stated that he went to Thailand because there lives someone with a genderbender Quirk.

If we're going to talk about LGBT manga and anime, let me take a quick second to plug Otouto no Otto (My Brother's Husband). It was created by a Bara Hentai artist because he was worried that his works were feeding into gay stereotypes, and is aimed at normalizing gay people to a Japanese audience. It's also really cute.
