During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.
Specific issues include:
- Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
- A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
- Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
- Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
- Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.
It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.
Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:
Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.
IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.
When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. " to everyone I missed").
No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.
We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.
What is the Work
Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.
Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?
This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.
Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?
Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.
Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?
Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard
Final Verdict?
Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

I'm just waiting to see the debate next year over whether freaking Nat Wolff/"Light Turner" counts.
There is no beginning. There is no end. There is only... Hooty.Oh god, a freaking Nick kid? Why not just get Channing Tatum if they don't care.

CM Dates; CM Pending; CM DraftsTo be fair, I mainly know him from Paper Towns. That was pretty good. But I imagine Hollywood will throw in some Adaptational Heroism, but there's no point in judging until the movie's out.
There is no beginning. There is no end. There is only... Hooty.Didn't even know that they were making another Death Note movie.
EDIT: Check that, there's going to be two upcoming Death Note films. One Japanese, one American.
It'd be pretty funny for Nat Wolff to be playing as a potential CM

I'm looking forward to seeing iconic characters like "Douchebag Bro" and "Douchebag Bro #2" on the big screen. Seriously, though, it might be good. At the very least having Willem Dafoe as Ryuk might be fun to watch.
YES. I'm probably only going to watch the new Death Note for Willem Dafoe's Ryuk because holy shit, that's some on the nose casting.
Oh, for Major Taussig from Hornets' Nest...I wrote him up years ago:
- Major Taussig in the World War II film Hornets' Nest is a cold, cruel man who is firmly distinct from the other reasonable German Soldiers. A member of the SS who has no compunction in committing war crimes, Taussig spends the film trying to murder or torture any 'Partisans' he comes across in the Italian countryside. At the film's opening, Taussig shows off his methods by gathering every man, woman and child in the village, lining them up and having them all gunned down without batting an eye before taking the village as a base for his men.
He was already on the film page; I just added him to the YMMV page (wow, effortposts weren't much of a thing back then).
CM Dates; CM Pending; CM Drafts... "Light Turner?" Why change the nationality? I will echo the great casting of Ryuk, though.
All the Ace Attorney villains mentioned, Angelus, Light Yagami, and Shido are still keepers.
The fate of Anime!Lysandre can be discussed at the end of the month, but what I said before about the character stays the same. He easily passes the heinous standard and might have qualified were it not for three notable mitigating factors that hold him back.

I've been staying out of this extremely uninteresting Death Note discussion, but I won't miss an opportunity to explain the Dub Name Change.
Light Turner, in this case, is because he "turned away from the light" after getting the Death Note.
By the way guys, I found the character that might count; Bishop of Aquila from Ladyhawke. I did search function and he was once discussed but the discussion did not go anywhere. I will watch the movie and effort-post him.

Welcome to the world of greatest media!I would of liked it better if they gave him a more evil sounding name
edited 15th Sep '16 10:26:32 AM by snakeky-man
But Light doesn't start off as evil. And he's not someone with an Obviously Evil sounding name because that way he'd be too suspicious as Kira. That's the whole point.
Still doesn't change the fact that name is an unnecessarily silly pun.
I know that the 2017 Death Note movie is American made, but does it still take place in Japan, or will it just be set in America?
We're all caught up, aren't we? I think the only pending entries are Lighty's (including the Secret Six rewrites), and mine for Laymon's Ripper. Gabriel...I don't know.
Ah, I see Morgenthaler did a trimmed (well, at least under 400 words now ) entry for Haazheel

CM Dates; CM Pending; CM DraftsAdd my Roch Theriault rewrite on the pendings, please. I've procrastinated on that too long.

There are two unapproved entries on Destroyermen. They were briefly brought up, but not approved, if I recall.
Why so serious? What's Roch from again?
Those entries (especially the second one) don't look like they've been approved.
Got it, and added.

Nevermind. I watched the movie, and I don't think Bishop qualifies. He is a big Hate Sink for sure, but otherwise a standard villain.

Welcome to the world of greatest media!how was the movie?
It was good. But it might by my biased opinion; I am a big fan of Medieval & Fantasy.
Welcome to the world of greatest media!
Oh god, wasn't light settled already?
Oh wow, depending on how he's portrayed this could end up causing even more of a crapshow
