This is the thread we use to talk things over with people who have received a suspension notice. A lot of the time the notice goes out just so we can explain how seriously we take certain things, not because we want the person to feel bad and go away.

If you're suspended, give What to Do If You Are Suspended a read, then post here to begin your appeal. We try to respond to appeals in order via batch posts every few days. If a moderator has responded to your appeal, you will receive a notification in your private messages, even if you're suspended from PMs.

The Forum Rules apply here.

Don'ts

  • Don't be rude. Rule 1 applies here, too.
  • Don't try to negotiate your suspension outside of this thread, such as by sending Private Messages to moderators or posting elsewhere. Such activity may be thumped or otherwise removed, and may warrant an additional suspension block if it keeps happening. All communications have to take place within this thread.
  • Don't respond to other suspended users. This is a place for you to discuss your suspension, not others'.
  • Don't post multiple times about your appeal if it hasn't been a few days since your last reply from us, since it makes it more difficult to compose responses. If you've posted, we're likely looking at it, and kindly request you to be more patient.
  • Don't make another account to try and get around your suspension. This is called ban evasion and will get you bounced. (Again, read What to Do If You Are Suspended if you don't know what these words mean.)

I'm still waiting for my suspension to be lifted. I never actually wanted to put the Spongebob picture in the Jerkass page. What I was originally going to do was put the picture of Homer Simpson that described his gentle side and his violent side. The description on the bottom of the picture said: "Homer Simpson, before and after." This is because The Simpsons is the Trope Namer for Jerkass. I didn't know how to replace the image at that time. As I said, I didn't mean to put the Spongebob picture on the page. I just used that picture to test image replacements. As I was about to reset the image into the original image of Cartman, my computer crashed unexpectedly at the wrong time. When I rebooted back online, that's when I found out I was banned. So now I'm waiting for a response to have my editing privileges back.

Whenever I click the "edit" button, I'm told "editing has been turned off for you", but I'm not sure why. Did I do something wrong? I never meant to. Sometimes I got messages "explaining the badness of natter", but it was never clear to me how what I'd written was natter. If it's because of my edits to the PETA page, I'm really sorry. I just thought the page was presenting only the positive side of the organization and needed more balance, but perhaps I went about it the wrong way. Whatever it was I did, what should I have done instead? And why has my page for Day At Last Chance been deleted when so many other tropers were allowed to place pages about their works? I'm trying not to sound whiny, but I seem to have been blocked without fair warning and possibly for doing well-intentioned things wrong without realizing I was going about it the wrong way. May I please be allowed to edit again and have my video page back?

@NC69: If you say it was an accident and you did not mean to vandalize the page, I suppose I can lift the suspension. Your explanation smacks of "the dog ate my homework", though, and we don't give many third chances.

@411314: I'm amused that you thought the writeup as it existed was "positive". It was in fact so negative that I have deleted the entire examples list and recommended the article for cutting. This wiki is not an opportunity to tell us how evil you think Real Life people are. But what really annoys me is that you were told this by other people cleaning up your edits and persisted in adding them back anyway.

If I remember correctly, the page refereed to PETA as Hero Antagonists and said "there heart is certainly in the right place", which sounds positive to me. I must have misunderstood the messages I was getting in response, because I thought the problem was with the way I added the info (as a bullet point under the original trope write-up) rather than what I wrote. I then tried (though I admit, rather clumsily) to re-write it as one section that would point out the arguments for and against the claim that PETA has its heart in the right place. The original entry also seemed to me to be implying that PETA's heart was in the right place because they only want to stop animals from being treated cruelly. Since their long-term goal is to eliminate any human use of animals altogether, this seemed like a lie of omission to me, so I tried to point out what was being omitted. My goal was not to "point out how evil" PETA is (for all I know, they may have done some very good things as well) but merely to point out some info I thought was important about PETA that the previous editor was missing. What would've been a better, more constructive way to accomplish these goals?

You got roped into the basic problem with the article, which was that it talked about a Real Life organization in terms of things like "hero" and "antagonist", which is something we're trying to avoid. Following the example provided, you proceeded to stoke the fire.

I hope you have seen the reason why we don't allow articles to be written in this fashion. In the future, if you see that an article is overly negative or positive in regards to a Real Life person or group, or uses any tropes that talk about morality or their position as a hero or villain, please ask your fellow tropers about it, either here on the forums or on Ask The Tropers, so we can address the issues collectively.

Suspension lifted.

Hello, I would like to know what I did to get suspended because I wasn't informed. Would you please tell me so I can make sure to not do it again, please?

@The Rat Squid: Okay, well, how do I put this delicately? Almost all of your edits need to be cleaned up or undone. Why is that, you ask? Because you're kind of CRAZY with the tone and the enthusiasm level. You took it on yourself to add Playing With entries for several tropes that don't really need them. You make entries (not comments, mind you) on a YMMV page like, "Wow, I love how all of your links failed!" Your edit reasons are WAAYY RADICALLY CRAZY DUDE.

Can you dial it back a bit? You come across as the guy who barges into the party and decides that he and he alone will be the center of attention.

From the looks of things you got banned for rude edit reasons. (To wit: calling another troper a "pussy" for taking down an image.)

Let's work on your people skills a bit. Changes to the wiki are not the end of the world. Change happens, and if you don't like it, there are more constructive ways of dealing with it than yelling at people in the discussion pages and in edit reasons.

If you're so invested in the wiki that the removal of an article seems like a personal attack, then maybe you need a break. Deep breaths, okay?

Yeah, I guess I did get a bit overexcited with the editing with those playing with's, got sick of those though, and as you that link fail comment I thought it was kind of needed I mean seriously why is it 5 times out of 10 on this site a link fails? Anyways I appreciate you informing me and if I get my editing rights back I promise to tone it down and be a bit less crazy because I got a refill on my medication, I have adhd in case you were wondering.

It is never acceptable to comment on another troper's edits in the page itself. See Conversation In The Main Page and How To Write An Example. Report back when you understand those and I'll lift the suspension.

I think editing was turned off for me because I put a title with over 20 inbounds on the Cut List. Okay, from now on, I'll only be putting titles with no links to other TV Tropes pages and with only 20 inbounds or less. I'd like to edit again.

It wasn't just one article either. It was over eleven.

Why don't you chill with cutlisting redirects in general, Goldstone? The reason Redirects Are Free is a policy is because there's no need to cut them unless they are, specifically, the old name for a renamed trope AND have no wicks or inbounds. Redirects with no wicks are not automatically cutlist fodder unless they are inaccurate or otherwise problematic.

@The Rat Squid: Okay, I'll let you edit again. Just try to be calm about it, okay? smile

I was only once, and I didn't figure it was a big deal because it was only 29 and not a huge number over the norm that I was told it was 20, after that I was only aiming at titles with 0 or little to no inbounds.

Okay I've learned my lesson. No more than 20 inbounds it is.

That's what I read at first, but then someone told me it was changed to 20 and no put any titles on the Cut List that have around 1000 inbounds.

Okay, if 10 is the limit, I'll take it.

I may be behind in keeping track of TRS policy. Still, let's not push the boundaries, k? And leave all those normal redirects alone unless they are misleading. Lifted.

But this is not the first time you've been to this thread. You've been warned — if there's a next time it won't be so easy.
