This is the thread we use to talk things over with people who have received a suspension notice. A lot of the time the notice goes out just so we can explain how seriously we take certain things, not because we want the person to feel bad and go away.

If you're suspended, give What to Do If You Are Suspended a read, then post here to begin your appeal. We try to respond to appeals in order via batch posts every few days. If a moderator has responded to your appeal, you will receive a notification in your private messages, even if you're suspended from PMs.

The Forum Rules apply here.

Don'ts

  • Don't be rude. Rule 1 applies here, too.
  • Don't try to negotiate your suspension outside of this thread, such as by sending Private Messages to moderators or posting elsewhere. Such activity may be thumped or otherwise removed, and may warrant an additional suspension block if it keeps happening. All communications have to take place within this thread.
  • Don't respond to other suspended users. This is a place for you to discuss your suspension, not others'.
  • Don't post multiple times about your appeal if it hasn't been a few days since your last reply from us, since it makes it more difficult to compose responses. If you've posted, we're likely looking at it, and kindly request you to be more patient.
  • Don't make another account to try and get around your suspension. This is called ban evasion and will get you bounced. (Again, read What to Do If You Are Suspended if you don't know what these words mean.)

@ Shimaspawn:

I did it without thinking; the example sheet was huge, and it seemed to be a case of pretty much every work I've ever seen. The Trope seemed like it was getting Universal, and from experience we don't have examples on Universal Tropes pages - plus a closely related page had a similar marker - and that page also stated it didn't need examples and had no examples. I even added to the desciption (although not the discussion) that it seemed to be a universal trope.

(I can't remember the page now; I just remember doing it)

I should have discussed an edit that size before I changed it, and checked to see if other people agreed; I understand that now. If we didn't have Restore tools I'd probably have made a serious mess of the page. So it's a good thing we do.

Can I please edit again?

The other thing you lack is an understanding of what an omnipresent trope is.

The work had less than one full page of examples. That's far from every work ever and it's not a trope that's actually omnipresent. Actual omnipresent tropes are very rare. People have a tendency to give that label to any trope that's common, but actual omnipresent plots are things like Protagonist. Tropes that are basically required for a story to exist. Not just tropes that show up a lot.

Your terms are acceptable; I will turn my attentions to the Elf Only Inn character sheet once my suspension is lifted. Not sure how much time I can sink into it (fairly busy with several projects at the moment), but I'll do my best to get those placeholders tracked down before I run around doing other stuff too much.

(I did ask for help with the page, but only got one response, and he only updated one entry. Wish other fans would take interest; I prefer the cooperative wiki mode to just setting up a page all by myself. Which is part of why I like this site.)

Alright, Kilyle. Editing has been turned back on. Remember, if you can't come up with the name, it shouldn't be on the page.

@ Shimaspawn

Well, I won't pretend that I fully understand what an Omnipresent Trope is just yet - well, what makes an omnipresent trope - but I sure won't try to label a trope as one until I do.

So can I please have my edit priviliges back now?

@ Harley: I'll lift the suspension. Try to be a bit more careful about making big changes unilaterally.

Honestly, launching tropes in such terrible state that they need to go to the TRS immediately to be cleaned up, vandalizing existing tropes to support your arbitrary splits, moving examples around to tropes seemingly at random, and general making a mess of things.

Someone said in an earlier discussion that I was supposed to send confusing tropes to YKTTW to give them opportunity to be discussed, so I sent Saint Chevalier there, but few people said anything about it.

I'm sorry for making major changes without a TRS in the first place. I should have realized back then that "anyone can edit" doesn't mean that it's okay to make major changes on my own.

Confusing tropes go to the TRS not the YKTTW and you've left a huge mess for others to clean up. Your YKTTW threads also seem to be failing to create quality articles.

I was misinformed. I now understand the importance of a YKTTW and TRS. What should I do now?

I don't know. It's going to take months to clean up the amount of mess you've made.

I tried to edit a page today, but it says that editing has been turned off for me. I thought maybe I was unallowed to edit only the Pandering to the Base page (I posted some Friendship is Magic info on that page even though I don't watch that show, but then someone removed the info I posted, and he didn't even specify why), but then I tried to edit other pages and post on the "You Know That Show" page, but it won't let me edit no matter what now.

Can someone please help me?

You were suspended for breaking the cardinal rule: Don't be a dick.

Your edit on Pandering to the Base:

Apparently, there is a scene in one of the latest episodes in which Pinkie Pie says "Uh-oh, I gotta go!", and then it cuts to her sitting on the toilet. It's obvious that they only put that scene in there for the crazy, batshit fans that like to masturbate to the ponies.

That's unacceptably rude, and was reported as offensive. I don't know why you thought that was acceptable to add to the page, but that isn't the sort of thing we go for around here.

You don't think there's a problem with "It's obvious that they only put that scene in there for the crazy, batshit fans that like to masturbate to the ponies"?

To explain why that's wrong, how about I go to the Pandering to the Base page and say that Snake and Ocelot were only in MGS2 so that people could jerk off watching it? You can tell how stupid that is even if I don't call MGS fans (such as myself) "crazy" or "batshit."

Ninja'd.

I'm going to lift the suspension, but I highly recommend you take some time and browse Administrivia to acquaint yourself with our culture before resuming editing. Of note, TV Tropes Customs and The Troping Code should be good reads. The sandbox for the Dont Be Creepy policy is probably also relevant.

Do note that we almost never give third chances. If you are suspended from editing again, it will almost certainly be permanent.

I have been banned and would like to know how long it lasts/if it could be lifted. I’m pretty sure my ban was from some bad cases of natter. I understand that now. Sorry, I am new to Tvtropes.

It was indeed from Natter, and also from using first person on the wiki, incorrect Example Indentation, and Justifying Edits.

Before reversing the suspension, I'd like to know that you understand why all of those are a bad idea, not just natter.
