Oh, speaking of, I'd like to call attention to a pretty awesome furry webcomic (of sorts) that I've only recently discovered! It's called Red Equinox, by Gillpanda (yes, you may have heard that name before for a different series), and just look at the cover of the most recent issue. Awesome.

(I say of sorts because it's all completed and being uploaded a page at a time via FA, but is also available as a file, apparently.)

Hi ya'll. Not a furry, but I have some questions.

For context, I'm in a Discord server for one of the characters in Rivals Of Aether. With the game's cast being composed exclusively of anthropomorphic animals, there's no avoiding the connections to the furry fandom, so there's a lot of joking around and nobody really cares who's a furry or not. To make a long story short, I make a joke to someone that boils down to "everyone who plays Rivals is a furry", and he gets pretty defensive. He didn't act rude or insult anyone, but he was clearly uncomfortable with being called a furry and said, "I know it's a joke but people say it so much I have to take it seriously."

Other than being kind of a stick in the mud, this guy wasn't doing anything wrong, but it made me wonder just how much of a stigma there is against furries, which leads me to my questions: How open are you about being a furry outside of places like dedicated furry forums/chats? How do people outside the fandom react when you tell them you're a furry? Have you ever faced outright harassment for being one?

It's still one of those things most people I know just tend not to mention or talk about outside specific spaces.

I don't think it's all that hard for people to guess in my case online, but I'll never openly identify as one unless someone explicitly asks me for whatever reason. So yeah. Still something of a stigma attached to it.

Agreed that there is still some stigma to it, but what do you expect when society wants to shame anyone who doesn't fit the generally accepted "norm."

I often shamelessly have animal themed profile pics or usernames, but I don't greet people with "Hello I'm a furry! OwO"

If I'm asked? Well with 90% certainty they are already convinced I am one, so no use denying it. Can't remember any significant harassment, but I never really visit too many websites anyway, and I steer clear of places I just know are just festering pits of poorly conceived rampant arguing. Like youtube comments.

most people i know irl don't even know what a furry is, so i don't consider it relevant to announce irl. i'm pretty open about announcing it on internet accounts not tied to my real identity, though, since on the sites they're on furries are common or at least an accepted group.

speaking of not wanting to be known as a furry, a chat friend i have likes pokemon and ninetales in particular, but isn't a furry and doesn't want to be called one - so naturally we call him a furry at every possible opportunity. i even made a sort-of fursona for him as a joke.

not sure why he's so adamant about not being known as a furry. i know he doesn't like the lewd side of the fandom, partly because he's asexual. but unfortunately for him, our chat is very furry AND lewd Ow O
